Art and Artists - A Critique

There are many ways to investigate the inner workings of an individual; when rummaging through his journal entries, sifting through his last library selections, or perhaps most notable, analyzing the product of his talents. Such was the case when attempting to identify with Mr. Hugh Wolfe in Life in the Iron Mills. The result of a sad and harsh life appears to have been encapsulated to a distinct human sculpture created by his skillful hand. It was a nude woman seemingly muscular, [and] grown coarse with labor. Her muscles stood fully fervent, as a starving wolf; and were also described by other characters in the story as having a resemblance to someone dying of thirst. Likewise, Hugh Wolfes figure had long been hardened by the back-breaking labor suffered at the mill; and, as described by Mitchell, both were hungry for the answers to questions asked of God. In Hughs eyes, the artist in him would not exist without the ruthless life he was experiencing. Unlike the typical artist tutored into their expertise, Hugh would say that the difficult life you lived was the sole cause for mastering your craft, but he understood that the price for his skills would be death; most assuredly due to hard labor. So, in a way, sculpting was an escape for him to dream of a different life under different circumstances. On the other hand, after reading the selection Conversations in a Studio in Art and Artists, I observed artists that had been taught to excel at their talents; whether it be painting, sculpting, or any other skill. To these artists, irritation due to an uncompleted task or worry about finances would kill someone faster than, say hard labor. As long as they continued to appreciate and enjoy what they accomplished as artists, life would continue to bless them with happiness and longevity.

Under more favorable conditions, perhaps Hugh Wolfe would have been an even more accomplished sculptor, and widely praised. Or perhaps he would never have discovered his talent, living a dispassionate life as, possibly, a merchant; having never experienced the freedom of expressing ones passions and feelings through art.
