Classroom Policies and Procedures 2012-2013 English 10 American Lit Ms. Pantano/Mrs. Metz - Room F-111 1. Arrive on time.

e. Class begins when the bell rings. Tardy rules per Student Handbook. 2. Bring appropriate materials to class i.e. binder, spiral notebook, paper, navy blue or black pen/pencil. 3. No food in class without approval (exceptions are special occasions, class presentations, motivational rewards, class merit). Beverages are allowed as long as the container has a screw-top on it and remains closed while on the desk. 4. The classroom is not a bathroom or a hair salon. For hygienic purposes, avoid spraying substances (hair spray, perfume), applying make-up and combing hair in class. 5. Do not stand around the door waiting for the bell. When class is over, you will be dismissed. Failure to do this may cause the entire class to stay after the bell. 6. This classroom is shared with others. Keep the room neat. Pick up around your desk, putting all waste in the waste basket. Do not write on the desks, walls, or books in the room. Make sure you push in your chair before you leave class. Property defacement may result in cleaning the affected areas or detention. Please have pride in your school. 7. Show courtesy to others when they are talking. I only recognize students who raise their hands and wait their turn to speak. Classroom courtesy and participation will be an integral part of your grade. Inability to keep quiet in class and constant reprimands may result in change of seat or detention. 8. School rules regarding appearance will be adhered to. Consult your Student Handbook for proper attire. You will be asked to change if you are wearing inappropriate clothing (even if its 5th or 6th hour!). 9. The area on, in, under, and behind my desk is off limits. Not only is this my personal space, but a place where student information, graded assignments, and records are kept in confidentiality. Please respect this. 10. Substitute teachers will be treated with respect and courtesy. Subbing is often a very difficult and thankless job. I expect my classes to represent me in my absence with class and integrity. Reports to the contrary may result in punitive action.

11. Sleeping in class is unacceptable. Please dont put your head down on your desk during class. 12. Using the computers without permission is a major infraction. A 25-point deduction from behavior points for each occurrence. 13. No iPods or cell phones in class without permission. First infraction, confiscation and referral to office. 14. Your report card grades are a reflection of your own work. Anyone caught cheating or plagiarizing on stories will receive an automatic zero for that assignment without chance for make-up. Anyone caught plagiarizing will receive a failing grade for the card marking. 15. Bathrooms are located right by the cafeteria or A-wing. Realizing that emergencies can happen, a few passes will be allowed per quarter. Use your time in class wisely. 16. Titan Time Tutoring should be used to make up missed assignments and tests and to prepare for the ACT test. Students who utilize TTT for English preparation and study will be given 5-points extra credit per occurrence. 17. Make-up work and tests resulting from class absence will follow Student Handbook rules. If you have an excused absence, it is YOUR responsibility to find out what you missed by checking the homework logbook on the student utility desk, or by checking the class website. Do NOT ask me what you missed while you were gone. See me at the end of class to ask for any handouts you may need. All missed work from an excused absence will have to be made up outside of the instructional day. If you have an unexcused absence, you are not entitled to make up work for the class periods you missed period. If you are suspended, make-up work will be credited per Student Handbook guidelines. Students can keep up on missed work and follow weekly lesson plans online at http://kmetzclassroom.weebly.com 18. Vocabulary tests (20 points each) and vocabulary checks (5 points each) are every Thursday. Two missed vocab checks with excused absence are allowed per quarter without penalty. Two missed vocab checks with unexcused absence or failure to do homework is a 5-point deduction each. Three or more missed vocab checks, whether excused or unexcused, are a 10-point deduction per occurrence. Vocab check homework cannot be handed in the next day for credit. While the assignment is homework, there is also an in-class assignment that cannot be repeated upon return. An in-class vocab assignment cannot be made up as the answers are given in class after each vocab test. Vocab tests may be made up with an excused absence up to the day before the next vocabulary test. It is the students responsibility to set up a make-up day and time with the teacher. Failure to make up the vocab test in this time frame will result in zero points for that test.

19. Security, fire, and weather emergencies are rare, but not impossible. If such an emergency occurs, please give me your full attention and follow my directions calmly and quietly. I am your link to safety. 20. Report cards not only reflect a letter grade, but an individual citizenship rating as well. Those students who exhibit high moral and ethical standards, and who choose to take pride in themselves and their school, will automatically contribute positively in the classroom and to others. Card markings will reflect your effort in this area. It is up to each student to project a positive image and attitude. Our school is very fortunate to have a diverse group of people assembled under one roof. We can learn so much from each other by teaching each other that diversity is what makes Stevenson High School a school of excellence. Under NO circumstances will any type of disrespect for students, teachers, and staff be tolerated. I cannot stress this enough. Failure to respect this will result in immediate referral, as well as possible transfer or suspension. Fifty points (-50) will be deducted for each major behavioral infraction. 21. 22. Mrs. Metz has a personal library of books that you are able to borrow. You may check out books for 2 weeks at a time. Each student who is interested in borrowing books must sign up to do so with Mrs. Metz. You may not use these books if you do not sign up. See Mrs. Metz for more details. To our students: We are truly impressed with the quality of character in the Stevenson student body. You set an example by showing care and compassion for others, and being helpful where others may hinder. You represent yourself, your family, and your school with class wherever you go and whatever you do, and it shows. Remember this . . . if you smile, the whole world will smile with you! By ourselves, we can make a difference. But together, we can change the world. We are proud to have you in our class and look forward to a great year! Ms. Pantano and Mrs. Metz

Policy and Procedure Student/Parent Acknowledgement Form Student Name: _____________________________________ Dear Parent(s) or Guardian(s): The attached policies and guidelines are in place to make students aware of their responsibilities and goals for the coming school year. Students have a personal responsibility for their own grades and behavior, so I do not routinely call home. You will, however, receive a progress report the fifth week of every card marking, and a report card every ten weeks. If I need to speak with a parent, there will be a comment on the report card indicating that the parent should call me at their earliest convenience. If you do not receive a progress report or report card, please call the school immediately. If you have any questions or concerns about your childs progress, please do not hesitate to contact us. It is our goal to see that each student grows and excels to the best of their ability. This is not an easy task without parent support and student initiative. The relationship and communication between student-teacher-parent is paramount if students are to have a successful learning experience. Parent participation in Stevensons Open House (Tuesday, September 20, 2011) and Parent Teacher Conferences (November) are important venues for communication. We can be reached by email (kristin.metz@uticak12.org and pantano.paula@uticak12.org), and phone ((586)797-2111) if you should have any questions or concerns. Please also feel free to check out our classroom website for up to date class information and links to resources: http://kmetzclassroom.weebly.com We look forward to being a part of your childs educational discoveries! Please sign below to acknowledge that you have read the class overview and are supportive of the goals and methods outlined therein. Please return this form with your child to school. Thank you very much. Ms. Paula Pantano & Mrs. Kristi Metz
