Math 5th Grade

Grade Level

Curriculum Standards

5-5.4 The student will demonstrate through the mathematical processes an understanding of the units and systems of measurement and the application of tools and formulas to determine measurements. Its important that students remember the formulas to figure out the area of different shapes. Area is the inside of a polygon. Area is also defined as the space that a shape covers.

Description and Background Information

Lesson Objectives

The students will be able to apply formulas to determine the area of triangles, rectangles, squares, and parallelograms.

Varying Objectives for Individuals Needs

I will be presenting information on a PowerPoint about Area. All of the content is based on Area. The presentation will include the definition of area, an example of each shape, its formula to find the area, and an example. For other students who need hands on instruction, I will present manipulatives to demonstrate the area of a shape. A majority of students learn better with hand-on materials. For students who have already mastered the concept, I will allow them to assist other students who dont understand the content completely. For the students who speak little English, they will be paired with a classmate to assist them in their learning process.

Statement of Purpose

It is important for the students to learn the area of shapes because it give the students a chance to use math that they may need to use outside of school. Many careers like architecture, aeronautical and graphics design use area on a regular basis.

Materials and Resources

Teacher: Computer PACT Mathematics Book SC State Standards Whiteboard

Student: Paper Pencil Math Binder

Anticipatory Set

The students will think about their dream house. They will get a white sheet of paper and design your dream house with furniture, rooms, kitchen, etc. Random students will be allowed to present their dream house to the class and explain how they designed their house using area.

Part II: IMPLEMENTATION

Pre-assessment

Prior to the lesson, I will ask them general questions about area and give some examples to see if they really understand the importance of area. For example: what is the area of a square? How do you think we will figure it out? Prior to the actual lesson, the students will also be given a pre-assessment based on a variety of content, at the beginning of the assessment.

Teacher Modeling or Demonstration

During guided practice, I will model how the students should show their work when they are trying to find the area of a shape. I will also model the proper technique to find the area of a shape.

Guided Practice

During the direct instruction using PowerPoint, the students and I will complete a variety of examples together. The students will also receive a worksheet on area which we will complete together.

Checking for Understanding

I will ask students to raise their hands if they have questions or dont understand. Then I will call on specific students to ask specific questions to those who I know who are not focused. Here are some of the questions I will ask: what is the formula to find the area of a square? What is the formula to find the area of a rectangle? I will also allow the students to play in a race to answer specific questions on the white board. Thumbs up is another technique to check for understanding.

Independent Practice

The student will complete a short class activity with a few questions from the content learned for the day. They will have to complete the activity independently.

Closure

Ticket out the Door!!! The students had to write the formula for the perimeter and the area of a parallelogram.

Assessment (attach to lesson plan)

To determine if the students have obtained the information, they will be given an assessment on Friday to cover the whole standard. Perimeter and area are covered in the standard.

Extension Activities

The students will have another fun perimeter worksheet for homework. The answers will unlock a secret picture. They can receive help from parents, friends, or family member to help improve their performance.

Technology

Technology will be used to assist in the students learning process by using the White Board and a PowerPoint presentation. I will use it to present information to the students. The students will be able to read the content as well as hear the content being taught. They will also be allowed to write on the board to present their work to the entire class.

Connection Across the Curriculum

Science- We will discuss the perimeter of different solids that they can actually hold. Social Studies-We will discuss some historical people discussed in the social studies book. English-The students will have to read the problems fluently. Art-The students will be drawing different figures. Music-They will be introduced to an Area song, which will help them remember the formulas. PE-The students will stretch for every 3 problem they answer correctly.

PART III: REFLECTION

Strengths

I believe my instructional strategies were very good. The students loved the technology so they definitely retained the information from that. I randomly choose students to answer specific questions throughout the lesson. Overall, I believe I created a good lesson plan. All the students were trying to participate in all the activities.

Weaknesses

I didnt have a weakness in my instructional technique. All of the students were engaged during the entire lesson. Even the students who usually doesnt focus for along period of time, stayed focused for the duration of the lesson.

Suggestions for Improvement

If I could extend the time for instructional time, I absolutely would. I would break up the content more and allow more time for interaction with the students, like more games and fun activities. The activities that Ive created were fun, but wish I had more time to do more.
