Foundations of Kinesiology Final Exam Review Guide Spring 2013 We will be meeting in the computer lab to take this

exam. The essay portion will be typed using the computers. The objective portion will be done with traditional paper and pen. The morning class will meet at 8 AM and the afternoon class at 12 noon. Topics covered since the mid-term exam: 1) Two weeks spent on career opportunities. This involved readings from text, speakers, and practical experience. There will be no questions on the final related to this section of the course. 2) Philosophy of sport and movement Focus on all three of the three primary areas covered in this power point: Philosophy, Ethics and the Value of Play. Philosophy, ethics and any other slides up to The Value of Play might (will) show up on the objective portion of the exam. Use the Value of Play info to answer one of the potential essay questions. Particularly focus on concerns about play in America, what has caused changes, value of play and possible solutions. 3) Sociology of sport and movement While not all of this power point will be used in the socialization essay, much of it will help. The specific information on Title IX beginning with the slide Title IX: What is it? will be important help on the objective portion of the exam. 4) Minority experience in sport This power point will also provide lots of information for the required socialization essay. In addition, you will see of some of this information on the objective portion of the exam. 5) Children and sport This power point will be the primary resource for writing an essay on children and sport in America. Focus on the following questions: What is the main question we must ask ourselves as we look at current programs? What are the positive benefits and potential for negative experiences in current programs? What are the needs of children discussed in class? How might programs be restructured to more accurately reflect the needs of children and promote lifetime participation in sport and movement? The format of the final exam will be 30 objective questions and two essays. All students will answer the first essay question on socialization. The second essay question will be on

either children and sport or the value of play. You will be able to choose which prompt to respond to on the second essay. Required essay question: All students will write this essay in class (maximum 2 pages). This essay will be worth 20 points. Essay (20 pts. each): 2 pages maximum What is socialization and how are we socialized differently based on gender? Now relate socialization to sport in our country. Are there differences in the way we socialize groups into sport based on ethnic/cultural differences? What about gender differences and sport? What about children and sport socialization? As you consider each of these areas (ethnic/cultural differences, gender and children), can you look back at our sweep of history over the entire semester and see connections between historical moments in times and perspectives that set the stage for how each of these groups have been socialized related to sport? Note: For good flow, include these historical connections as you describe socialization with each of the groups listed above, not at the end of your essay. The second essay will relate specifically to the value of play or children in sport. This essay will be worth 15 pts.
