COLLEGE OF EDUCATION AND ORGANIZATIONAL LEADERSHIP ED 468: INTRODUCTORY SUPERVISED TEACHING

Candidate: Irene Navarro Content Area: Weight (Lesson 10.3) Subject Matter: Math Lesson Content Description: Provide a review of metric and US customary units. Type of Lesson: Direct Instruction Instructional Strategies/Method of Delivery: Direct Instruction Content Standard: MEASUREMENT AND GEOMETRY 1.1 Choose the appropriate tools and units (metric and U.S.) and estimate and measure the length, liquid volume, and weight/mass of given objects. ELD Standard: INTERMEDIATE COMPREHENSION Restate and execute multiple-step oral directions. Lesson Objective: All students will write and identify the weight of objects by reading the measurement on a scale. Assessment: Formative: -White Board Slates in the through portion of lesson -Observations -Student Discussions Summative: -Completed independent student worksheet Lesson/Assessment Modifications: ELL: Special Needs ELL: visual support, seated with a bilingual student, group activities (promote lower affective filter environment) ADHD: seated at the front of the class, given an individual copy of the outline of the lesson (to-do list), visual support Technology: 10.3 Lesson PowerPoint, document camera (used to go over workbook/reference book together with the students) Date: 03/11/13[MONDAY] Grade Level: 3rd Grade

INTO Anticipatory Set/Orientation As a class, discuss the meaning of weight by having a math message on the board: what does weight mean? Go over lessons vocabulary: weight, capacity of a scale, and precision Look at picture files and talk about weight (ex: ounces is used for measuring the weight of soda and a ton is used for measuring the weight of a truck, talk about weight found on cereal boxes such as grams) State technology that will be used: Power Point Re-state Content Standard and Objective in student friendly terminology: Must tie into Assessment By the end of the lesson, you will know different kinds of scales, know objects you could weigh on the scales, and know how to read weights on scales. Outline adaptations for EL and special needs students Picture files, partner support, seated at the front of the class

THROUGH
Modeling/Presentation Talk about weight with Power Point as a reference Have class open up their math reference books to page 165 to look at pictures of samples of scales Discuss each kind of scale and the capacity of a scale by providing several examples (ex: infant scales have the capacity of about 25 pounds. Therefore, an infant scale would not be used to weight a third grader). Discuss precision and provide several examples (ex: a bath scale would not be used to weigh a letter because it wouldnt be precise or ask questions such as: why do post office employees weigh letters? and show realia by showing mail with postage stamps). Guided/Structured Practice Show examples of how to read scales (going over student reference book) and different types of scales Go over different types of scales and give examples by guiding students to give examples together as a class Checking for Understanding/Formative Assessment Have class work in table groups to name things they would want to weigh for each type of scale (using page 246). Students can use reference pages (page 165) that were previously looked at for this activity. Have groups share their findings for each scale and what they said they could weigh on each scale (ex: what would you weight on a balance scale, a market scale, etc)

Show visual support for scales and where they are used as each type of scale is being discussed (this strategy is used as an adaptation for DI students) Vary up checking for understanding by using white board slates and think-pair-share strategies when going over each scale type examples

State technology that will be used (consistent in through): PowerPoint Outline adaptations for EL and special needs students (consistent in through): Visual support, seated at front of the class, group discussions (lower affective filter environment)

BEYOND
Independent Practice/Summative Assessment/Closure Class will independently complete page 247 in their math book on reading scales Give option for journaling time after worksheet is completed on what the students learned about weight and scales Close class with discussion on weights and scales State technology that will be used: document camera (display workbook/math journal prompt) Outline adaptations for EL and special needs students -Give more time to EL/special needs students -Scaffold them as they work independently on their worksheet -Have them orally state to me what they learned instead of writing in their math journal
