The Vietnam War was a war between North and South Vietnam. Ho Chi Minh, who was a communist dictator, led North Vietnam. The South was the democratic part of Vietnam. The South, with the help of the U.S. tried to fight the rise of communism in Vietnam, but sadly their efforts were in vain, as North Vietnam prevailed and Vietnam changed to a communist country.
The
1954. Vietnam, which was once a French colony, drove France out, then they split themselves in half on the 17th parallel. Over 2.7 million soldiers served on active duty between 1964 and 1975. Over 75,000 Americans were disabled, and over 58,000 were killed. There was much more combat for infantry men then there was during World War Two.
The U.S. helped France finically before they fully entered the war to fight North Vietnam. The U.S. tried to prevent communism, because they believed it was unfair, and the government too big of a role.
The Vietnam war sparked controversy in our country for voting rights. The problem was that that 18 year olds were made to fight, but couldnt vote. Eventually 18 year olds could vote!
