Syllabus: "An Introduction to Player Professionalism: Attitudes and Behaviors"

Overview This web-based, 8-module program enhances traditional, face-to-face minor league player development by providing an introduction to topics coaches do not have time to teach directly. Players benefit from an immediate impact on their professionalism and personal excellence. Learning Objectives After completing The Progressive Professional Program, players will be able to: 1. Better utilize the physical, thinking, and emotional selves. 2. Take greater control of moving toward professional goals. 3. Maintain an inward focus to more effectively solve problems. 4. Guide thoughts to positively impact body and performance. 5. Become more aware of self, team, and circumstances. 6. Better utilize instinct, inner wisdom, and insight. 7. Discover seven options to add significance to career success. 8. Engage in activities supporting the success of others. Program Structure and Schedule Players complete Modules 1 to 8, plus a Bonus Module according to a pre-determined schedule. Below is an introduction to each module, and a list of activities players must complete to successfully finish this program. Module 1: Who Am I? Lessons: Physical Self, Thinking Self, Emotional Self This is the foundation for all future modules and lessons in the Progressive Professional Program. In this first module, players explore a new way of answering the question, "Who Am I? by investigating the physical, thinking, and emotional parts of themselves. Activities: 1. Introduce yourself to other players enrolled in the program, and share what you hope to learn. 2. Watch a video about better self-knowledge through numbers. 3. Create a Quantified Self account and try a mobile app such as RunKeeper. 4. Complete a self-assessment on problem-solving, decision-making, and planning/organizing skills. 5. Review your teams Code of Conduct, and make a posting on our LinkedIn Discussion Board. Module 2: Going from I Am Not to I Am Lessons: Controlling Your Attention, Transforming Yourself, Toughness You're the one in control of how easy or difficult it is taking yourself from "I am not a major league baseball player" to "I am a major league baseball player." you will explore three factors to consider as you move forward in your career: attention, rules, and toughness. Activities: 1. Watch a video called, The Pain of Changing Yourself. 2. Create and share a photo collage of where you were, are, and want to be in your career. 3. Practice a specific mental exercise to help you control your attention. 4. Post and respond to others on our LinkedIn Discussion Board about the unwritten rules of baseball. 5. Compose a 300 to 350-word Blog describing a time when you had to be tough on yourself and how that helped you progress in your career. Module 3: Maintaining an Inward Focus Lessons: Stillpower vs Willpower, Clear Thinking, The Outside World Modules 3, 4, 5, and 6 focus on the book, Stillpower, by Garret Kramer, founder of Inner Sports. Mr. Kramer has provided consulting services to athletes and coaches. The term Stillpower refers to looking inside whether than outside yourself for solutions. Activities: 1. Watch two videos by Garret Kramer explaining stillpower and its relevance to athletes. 2. Reflect and post on your linoit board how you will use stillpower. 3. Create a VoiceThread on stillpower and respond to the VoiceThreads of other players. 4. Watch a video and post on your linoit board an action step about motivation. Module 4: Mind, Body, and Performance Lessons: Mind, Body, Performance Here players learn how to better focus the mind on the present moment including how to effectively apply visualization to improve performance, understand how what's good for the soul is good for the body, and how confidence and motivation impacts athletic performance. Activities: 1. Engage in an exercise that instantly creates measureable results. 2. Identify and connect with strength and conditioning specialists via LinkedIn. 3. Watch a video created by player Alfredo Escalera (KC Royals); then create a VoiceThread discussing confidence and motivation, and comment on VoiceThreads posted by other players. Module 5: Increasing Your Awareness Lessons: The Power of Awareness, Self-Awareness, Team-Awareness Awareness is consciousness of all things both inside (such as thoughts) and outside (such as people or events). Players cannot drift along in their careers without being aware or conscious of what's going on at all times. Activities: 1. Try an instant focus technique to expand your awareness. 2. Compose a 300 to 350-word Blog discussing how you can use team awareness to help the team overcome obstacles. Module 6: Ultimate Performance Tools

Lessons: Instinct, Inner Wisdom, Insight Most likely you have used instinct, inner wisdom, or insight as you moved closer to reaching a goal in the past. How did you use them? What did it feel like? What would you change about how you used them? In this module, you'll answer those questions and learn how to put them to better use in the future. Activities: 1. Post on your linoit board how you will listen more intently to your inner wisdom, and less to the random opinion of others. 2. Create a VoiceThread at least 2 minutes long in which you describe to other players how you will better utilize your instinct, inner wisdom, and insight as part of your own professional development program. Respond to the VoiceThreads of other players. Module 7: Success and Significance Lessons: The Seven Choices for Success and Significance This module focuses on ideas presented in the book, Seven Choices for Success and Significance: How to Live Life from the Inside Out, by Dr. Nido Qubein. (You were introduced to Dr. Qubein back in Module 2.) As you will see, Dr. Qubein's inside-out concepts presented in this book are closely aligned to Garret Kramer's work presented in his book, Stillpower. Activities: 1. Listen to an audio in which Dr. Qubein introduces the seven choices. 2. Listen to VoiceThreads by former MLB player Tommy John about the importance of adding significance to your success as a professional baseball player. 3. Post to our LinkedIn Discussion Board which one of the seven choices you have neglected, and what you will do differently to better support that choice. 4. Create and share a collage of photos showing things from your "to be" and your "stop doing" lists. 5. Compose a 300 to 350-word Blog telling the story of a risk you have taken to get you to where you are today in your career. Module 8: Paying it Forward Lessons: The Compound Effect, Gratitude, Tell to Win In this module, you will explore the benefits to yourself, your team, your organization, and others as you "pay it forward." In other words, do a good deed. Activities: 1. Watch a video by Darren Hardy as he explains the compound effect, then make a posting to your linoit board about what you need to do well to help your team succeed. 2. Complete a Gratitude Self-Assessment, and then contact three people thanking them for the role they played in helping you get to where you are today. 3. View a video of Magic Johnson as he discusses how he applies purposeful storytelling to reach goals. 4. View a video of a player Todd Cunningham (ATL Braves) using purposeful storytelling during a classroom visit where he teaches students how to use success strategies.

5. Create a VoiceThread describing how you will use purposeful storytelling. Comment on the VoiceThreads of other players. Bonus Module Lessons: G - O - L - F Former MLB player Tommy John created this module specifically for you in order to share his love and passion for the game of golf, while showing you how golf will benefit you in so many ways. These benefits will last all during, and even beyond your playing career.
