Oscar H. Suarez Professor Cole ENGL2010-043 27 April 2013 Reflective Writing about my ENGL 2010 Class For spring 2013 I decided to take the 2010 English class online. The class was different of those I took before on that area. I enjoyed the class reading the textbook and composing my papers, but I had missed to have a lecture by chat or video. The only direct communication I had with my peers was using the in box mail or the discussion area without really interact with them; we only communicate the strictly necessary for the peer review assignments. I found interesting this class because I had the opportunity work on my own. However, my progress was reflected on the effort I put on the class, and I am very satisfied with it. For the purpose of writing in different genres I picked a topic, negative effect of mobile devices, and I worked through it during the entire class. I have been very interested to effects of technology as part of my research for my major on computer science, and I had a big concern about the impact of diverse technologies on society, health, and environment. The assignments for this class give the chance to create, explore, research, and present my points of view packed in a memoir, an evaluation, a position, and

a video PSA. I liked the most working on the PSA to put together creativity, images, music, and videos, but at the same time make a good use of the English language. Every paper was different and I had to mold every one to obtain the right tone, and the requirements from Mr. Cole. I enjoy to write because is the best way to express my thoughts; I discover that since I was in high school back in my hometown Colombia. When I decided to come to the United States I learn the beautifulness of the written words, and facing the challenge to adopt a new language the English 2010 class gave the right tools to consider my audience, explore my resources, and my constraints. The use of ethos, pathos, logos, and kairos was essential to understand, and give sense to my papers. It also had helped me to identify a fitting response, and an opportunity on the essays I had written; for sure, the valuable theoretical lesson learned this semester will be reflected on my upcoming assignments since now. The importance of consider credible sources to support every one of my papers was crucial. Research and deep search were complemented with critical thinking to put all the pieces together. This is important because it is what makes my work trustworthy, and one of the most important ways to demonstrate credibility as an author is to acknowledge the sources Cheryl Glenn points in the textbook. Nowadays, plagiarism has emerged as the threat to fair acquiring of wisdom. Unfortunately, this unethical practice is

widespread on the Internet, and there it is where acknowledgment of sources makes the difference to give credit to who deserve it. While doing the assignments for this class I understand how important the plan and strategy are. I had spent great time reading, and researching around my topic. Therefore, I had to sit and think about it. Criticism and autonomy to evaluate my arguments helped to fit my responses. Writing rhetorically on my position and my memoir contrasts with the critical analysis presented on my evaluation. At last, my PSA reflects and collects elements from my previous papers. I consider these assignments as the great opportunity to plan four different styles to deliver same message. I would like to highlight the importance of planning my papers following the steps on the textbook: identify an opportunity, locate an audience, and identify a fitting response. After the initial steps I learned to do my outlines shaping the paper and dividing it in an introduction, body, and the conclusion. Peer review is the next stage and there it is where you can observe the audience first reaction, and it is the opportunity to improve the weaknesses in the paper, obviously depending on the critic evaluation of your peers. Personally, from three peers I worked with, just one of them was critical enough to improve my essay. I would like my peer reviewers to go far from the questions the teacher had formulated for the assignment. Sometimes would be better to get suggestions about our weaknesses to

make our papers competitive at college level, and not another assignment to complete. The final stage was to apply the necessary changes to my paper and turn it to be evaluated by the professor. This is the suspense part where you get a grade according to the effort you had invested on the class, and I do not have any further comments about it I found on my e-portfolio the best way to show my work at school and for this class is not an exception. I have written three nice papers, and a vide PSA that would make part of experience in college. As ancient cultures record their important data on stone, metals, and paper no we have the opportunity to upload our major assignments to the web. This is the best opportunity to show our intellectual face to be reached for other students, instructors, employers, and the general public. I have been revising and considering some changes to my papers before I post them, and as a hard reviser I am still going through the documents to post on the web the best of me, and the English 2010 class. Particularly, I am working on the way how I deliver my messages because being a Spanish speaker I had struggled with it, and every time I learn more about this beautiful language I want to write more because I really enjoy to do it.
