(Moment of Inertia) Moment of inertia of a body about its rotating axis is analogous to mass in Linear motion. If we compare equation of dynamics for Rotational and Linear motion, they look very similar.
In the above equations Torque ( ) is analogous to Force ( ) , acceleration ( ) is analogous to angular acceleration ( ) and Mass ( ) is analogous to Moment of inertia ( ) about the axis of rotation. The moment of inertia formulas of some common geometric shapes are given below in the chart, where the axis of rotation is passing through its center of mass in most cases.

These formulae are most commonly used in physics problems. However, if one needs to find the moment of inertia formula about another axis parallel to the axis passing through the center of mass, then there is something called as parallel axis theorem. It states: where is the perpendicular distance between new axis and the axis passing through center of mass.
In the first case the dotted line is passing through the center of the sphere, which is also the center of mass of the sphere. The formula for Moment of Inertia about the center of mass of solid sphere is Now we need to find the moment of inertia about an axis parallel to the previous axis. Here the perpendicular distance of the new axis to the previous one is a = R. Therefore by parallel axis theorem
