Materials: Timeline worksheet Pen or pencil Ruled paper Procedure: 1. Distribute the pre-test. Ask students about their current career interests. The answers will vary, from students who absolutely know what they want to do to those who have not thought much about it. Ask students what they have done to help them along in their career decision-making process. 2. Stress the concept of this being a process. Otherwise, students may think they have to make irreversible decisions. This is only the beginning for many of them. 3. Hand out Timeline worksheet. Ask the students to pick a college major and career path. Explain to students the purpose and process of creating the narrative timeline. The events in their lives are very important in determining what they will be when they become adults, how they handle challenges, even the type of student they are currently. This assignment will allow them to think about the major events in your life and write down - your story or your view. In the coping with event column, they will write about how they felt and what they do now when they feel that way. There are no correct or wrong experiences and feelings. 4. At this point, students will be able to complete the Timeline worksheet. 5. Ask students if they see any connections between the way they worked through the old challenge and the way they currently behave? Do they see a connection between the career they are interested in and the event? 6. Give each student an opportunity to discuss the connection found between an event and behavior or career. 7. Tell students to write out narrative timeline for homework, to reflect further, and return it to the counselor during the next session. 8. Distribute a post-test.
