Being born a child of Generation X and being labeled as the MTV generation, dreaming of anything remotely close to the

mass social media frenzy that would take place in the future would have been mind-boggling. Social media has become a huge part of virtually everyones life, in some way or other. Thinking Im not much of a media nut, I took note of the sites Ive signed up for: Facebook Twitter Youtube Pinterest Linkedin iGoogle Skype Flickr HR.com Tumblr QR codes for my Blackberry WhatsApp for Android phones

Not to mention the sites I signed up for to watch movies, get music.etc. Im tired just thinking about going through that entire (small) list to update my statuses, upload my pictures, chat with friends If I spent the approximate 22% of my time social networking, 21% doing searches, 20% reading content, 19% reading and composing emails, 13% of my time on multi-media sites and 5% shopping online that mediabistro.com claims people are using, and I did this for each of these sites, I wouldnt be able to hold down a job my day would be filled. (Bennett, 2012) If social media was a fad, it would have died out by now. Fads create excitement and enthusiasm for something and are short-lived. While most sites can be considered new by being possibly 2-5 years old, the internet media craze grows every day. Trying to keep up with the demands of being socially accepted in the world of Facebook or Linkedin is exhausting. Finding a status that many people like or want to comment on seems to be an adventure on its own because it seems otherwise pointless to post if nobody is going to comment. Linkedin has its moments too, by being recommended for your skills by your contacts. It is supposed to boost my visibility to the inside world of the social network and increase my chances of being noticed and recognized for company advancement or finding a new job altogether. Sure it is. I thought thats what rsums were for. While the craze to be on Facebook grabbed hold and still grows every day, I find the time it takes me to read through the nonsense, the pictures I dont want to see, the posts I could have done

without reading, ever in my lifetime, or being fortunate enough to see all the rants from my employees, turns me into an anti-social butterfly. Some of the most interesting facts I came across however, were very interesting to read and further my argument that Social Media is here to stay and will only revolutionize the way keep communicating with each other. According to Global Web Index:

Mobile with the number of people accessing the internet via a mobile phone increasing by 60.3% to 818.4 million in the last 2 years. Google+
Google+ is making an impact on the social media universe and is now the second largest social network.

What are some of the numbers on Googles social network built to protect it from Facebooks growth and data capture to ensure it remains relevant? It is Googles social layer that enhances its other online assets.

359 million monthly active users according to a Global Web Index study Its active users base grew by 33% from June 2012 through to March 2013

LinkedIn

Over 200 million users 2 new users join it every second 64% of users are outside the USA (Bullas, 2013)

The craze continues, but I choose not to go crazy over it.
