Critical Reflection Assessment of Learning Outcomes

To what extent did the learners achieve the intended learning outcomes? The students high level of participation during the lesson indicates the intended learning outcomes in relations to identifying and applying fundamental OH&S principles. The lesson was based around group discussions and individual attempts at the practical piece. The board of studies syllabus outcomes requires students to be able to assess workshop safety when working with materials, tools and machines The lesson plan, including the task, allowed students to comprehend the safety within the workshop, attempt a practical task in a safe manner, and again review safety. Students had a high achievement within the lesson. Describe the evidence you have for this. Students were given a 3-part task, to allow them to creatively illustrate their understanding. The students were involved in a group discussion on safety, followed by individual tasks allowing the teacher to view if each student was competent. In the Appendix, both the Safe vs. Unsafe class discussion sheet can be seen as well as the unsafe working situation sheet. The supervising teacher gave great feedback about these sheets and also said my positive feedback to students was great. Outline the follow-up to this lesson for the learners. Following this lesson, I would collect the entire unsafe working situation sheets from the students. By collecting and reviewing these sheets, a teacher can assess individual attainment of safety knowledge and give feedback relevant to each student what else was wrong in the scenarios, and where they went very well. It also gives the teacher an insight to what areas will need to be expanded on in following lessons. This would be done before moving on to working the other parts such as the finger cutting jig and router that will be needed in their attempt at the pencil case design and practical assessment task for year 7.

Evaluation of Teaching
Identify the teaching strategies/learning experiences that were most effective. Explain why. Using a whiteboard as a teaching tool assisted the group discussions as it was at the front of the classroom, which students could view and summarise into their own sheet, which they kept at the completion of the lesson. Asking students to raise their hands to answer direct questions about a safety issue was effective as the students only had to concentrate on one particular question or idea at a time. This then allowed me to link it all together at the end of the discussion when explaining the following task. For example, when collecting the tools required, they had to walk, tools facing down back to their work benches. During the demonstration with the students around the teacher, a teacher can see which students understand what they are demonstrating, and which students will need further explanation once they let them begin. When concluding the lesson, to recap on what the task had covered I asked students to share what they had learnt today and explain why it was important. However, students were less willing to share their individual attainment to the entire class. I then chose students at random to share their thoughts. All students asked did so, but were hesitant to elaborate. How appropriate was the timing throughout the various sections of the lesson? Why? The timing throughout my lesson plan ran smoothly throughout the actual lesson. All students finished their practical task, with some students doing an extension activity with extra difficulty. Both discussions with the class were presented to the class with no urgency to hurry through. In an honest opinion the conclusion took place in the last few minutes of the lesson and the boys were dismissed right on the bell. Describe how the selection and use of resources supported learning in the lesson. I think the boys really liked having the class discussion and board presentation alongside their own worksheets they could make notes on and keep for future reference. Most boys, except a high end Aspergers student were very involved with the discussion. I was actually surprised at how eager they were to contribute.

The one individual who didnt seem interested in the discussion however was very engaged in the practical class and seems to contain some very high skill in regards to timber work. The students also seemed to enjoy the demonstration of the task due to a higher understanding of what they had to achieve following it. I found the students also acted in a very positive way to when another student on their bench finished it would drive them to finish their piece too. Also on the other side of the spectrum if one student was having some difficulty there was a lot of support by the other students on his bench to help him out and this seemed to be a great motivational tool to the students struggling.

Identify the classroom management strategies that were most effective. Explain why. Upon arrival one management strategy was having the boys grab their PPE, in this case their glasses and apron when entering the room and this seemed to immediately settle most boys into the lesson. Throughout the lesson, the most effective management strategies were asking the students to raise their hands to answer any questions. This allowed respect to be shown to each student who was participating in the group discussion or answering questions. Students would provide their answers, which would extend new questions to the class. The student took this positively as they felt their questions were valid. What was most satisfying about the lesson? The most satisfying part of this lesson was walking around seeing each individual student attempting to complete their work, but also at the end of the lesson, seeing students who hadnt had much input in the first discussion, openly voice some great ideas about the unsafe scenarios that they had learnt within the first discussion. It was very satisfying to assist and watch development of these young year 7 students. Based on these reflections, outline the steps you should now take to improve your teaching in future lessons. The teacher examining my lesson made notes on my teaching method, suggesting I concentrate not to begin talking until all students have given me their full attention. I would also change the way I finished off the lesson. Instead of recapping by choosing students at random to share their ideas, I would tell all students at the beginning of the lesson that they would each have to share one point about safety that they had learnt within the lesson, to the class at the end. This would assist their overall understanding of safety, and allow for good assessment of each individuals attainment.
