1 Sample Syllabus PEP 164, Section 1 MWF 12:00-12:50 HQ 100 FALL 2014

Tiffany Peters, M.A. Office: NQ 355 Office hours: M/T/W/R 5pm 6pm Phone: 765-285-1191 Email: tmpeters@bsu.edu Course Description: PEP 164: Lifeskills for Student-Athletes is a course designed to prepare student-athletes for the rigors of college. The course will touch on issues relevant to the student-athlete experience. Student-athletes will develop the skills to be success on and off the field. This course will focus on the following: Academic Success Athletic Success Time Management Communication Diversity Life and Relationships Career development Course Objectives: 1. To introduce students to college success strategies. 2. To engage students in critical thinking about their experiences as student athletes. 3. To introduce students to multimedia tools to develop verbal and written communication skills. 4. To introduce students to group learning activities, and develop presentational skills. Textbook and Materials: A Student Athletes Guide to College Success by Petrie, T. A., Hankes, D. M., & Denson, E. L. iClicker: Each student must purchase and register their iClicker. Registration instructions will be posted on Blackboard. Blackboard: Course materials, grades, and notifications will be posted on Blackboard. Any additional materials will be provided under the Course Materials tab. Each student must become comfortable with Blackboard, and check their account daily. Podcasts will be posted in a weekly discussion board.

2 Assignments: Weekly Podcast Students will create a podcast each week about their experience as a student-athlete for a total of 16 podcasts. Each podcast must incorporate at least one theme presented in class or the textbook. To receive credit each student must submit an outline for each podcast, and post the podcast and outline to Blackboard before Friday at 10pm. Each podcast and outline is worth 10pts for a total of 160pts. Exams There will be three timed open note, open book exams. Exams will be posted on Blackboard, under the Exam tab. You will have one week to complete each exam. Exams are not collaborative, and are to be taken individually, and not in groups or with other students. If exams are not completed prior to the close date the student will receive a 0. Each exam is worth 50 pts for a total of 150 pts. Group Project: Teach a Lesson Students will present a lesson over one issue relating to student-athletes. Each group presentation will be 12- 15 minutes. Groups will be assigned by the instructor. All topics must be sent to the instructor by the end of the third week of class for approval. The lesson will be graded on individual performance (25 points) and group performance (25 points) for a total of 50 points. Attendance Attendance is expected. Attendance is essential to success in college and an integral component of this course. Attendance will be taken each day through an iClicker. Each student is allowed two unexcused absences. Each unexcused absence above two will result in a 2pt deduction. If a student has 5 or more unexcused absence it will result in failing grade. Attendance is worth 160 points. If a student is late it will result in a 1pt deduction from the overall points available for attendance. Excused absences, including university travel, athletic competitions, illness, or funerals must be communicated to the instructor in advance and the student must provide appropriate documentation of the absence. Grading Scale: A= 95%- 100%, A-=90%-94%, B+= 87%-89%, B= 83%- 86%, B-= 80%- 82%, C+=77%- 79%, C=73%-76%, C-=70%-72%, D+=67%- 69%, D=63%-66%, D-=60%-62%, F= 59% or lower

Academic Integrity Policy: Plagiarism and cheating of any kind will not be tolerated. Plagiarism or cheating on an assignment or exam will result in a failing grade for the specific assignment or exam. Rules of Conduct: As a courtesy all cell phones must be turned off or on silent during class. Laptops and tablets are encouraged for learning; however, if they present a distraction to your class engagement or performance you will be discouraged from utilizing those resources.
