THE MAGNETIC EFFECT OF A CURRENT CARRYING CONDUCTOR ( SPM 2009) INFERENCE : The strength of magnetic field of an electromagnet is affected

by the current flow HYPOTHESIS : The strength of the electromagnet increases when the current increases AIM : To investigate the relationship between the current and the strength of an electromagnet VARIABLES : MV- The current , I RV : The strength of electromagnet , N CV: Number of turns of the solenoid APPARATUS : A soft iron-core, insulated copper wire , pins in a petri dish , rheostat , ammeter , d.c power supply , switch and retort stand Procedure : 1. 50 turns of insulated copper wire wound onto the soft iron-core and arranged as shown 2. A d.c power supply is switched on and the switch is closed . the heostat adjusted until the current I=0.5 A. 3.The petri dish containing steels pin is raised to the lower end of electromagnet . The number of pins attracted to the soft iron core is counted as N . 4. The switch is open and steps 2 and 3 are repeatde using I = 1.0,1.5,2.0,2.5, and 3.0 A
