Date: 3/7/2013 Site Supervisor: Rebecca Wilson ULV Supervisor: Char Moon

Double Entry Journal What went well? Description: Students went to the BioCube website and entered their notes into the activity.

Analytic Reflection: Students were actively engaged in entering their notes to the website. This group of students enjoys working on computers. Two of the students have a difficult time when writing and readability is low. By allowing them to use the computer, these students are able to produce work that is readable.

What would I change next time? Description: I would change the activity to allow students to choose a hero of their choice instead of the one from the story.

Reflection: I believe this would provide the students with choice and creativity. By allowing them to write about someone that interests them, the students would be more engaged. It would also require that students create their own BioCube independently, rather than as a whole group, which would allow me to better assess their comprehension of the lesson.

What was engaging about the lesson? Description: These students like using technology Analytic Reflection: I have found that using technology whenever possible creates a buy-in from these students. They can create good work that is comparable to their peers because it allows them to create a clean and neat appearance in their work. How did I address struggling students? Description: I addressed struggling students by allowing them to work with a buddy when needed. Analytic Reflection: By allowing them to work in pairs when struggling with a certain area, the students build a sense of community. In addition, by working together the students re-teach themselves and further enhance their understanding of the lesson. What informal/formal assessments did I use? Description: I was able to walk around and observe and I collected their finished BioCubes.

Reflection: My observation of their classwork allowed me to identify problem areas and address them as needed. Collection of their finished BioCubes allowed me to assess their understanding of a biography and prepare them for their final essay.

How did I let the students know of the objective? Description: I stated it in the beginning of the lesson. Reflection: Stating the objective in the beginning of the lesson prepares the students for the lesson and what will be expected of them.

What student characteristics helped create this lesson? Description: The students in this group work well together and I structured the lesson to have several opportunities to work together. In addition, these students like to use technology resulting in the addition of computer activities. Reflection: I want the students to want to complete the lesson to the best of their abilities. By providing them with opportunities to work together, the students buy-in at a higher level. I also allowed them to use computers because they like to utilize technology and it is engaging for them.
