Characteristics of a Quality Unit

Aligned Are all of your ducks in a row?

Robust Does your unit plan have substance, flavor, and variety? Transparent Would anyone be able to pick up your unit and teach it?

Aligned
Begin with standards as basis of unit Content, skills, and assessments, reflect the standards selected All aspects of the unit plan include language consistent with the standards

Aligned Elements: Multimedia Unit

Convey messages Audio and visual elements Multiple modes of representation Using the internet Interpreted differently Importing and downloading Analyze a poem Multimedia project

Robust
Include a variety of instructional strategies Differentiate instruction to meet the needs of all learners Focus on one or more of the six shifts, CCR capacities, and/or mathematical practices

Looking at the Multimedia Unit

Instructional Strategies Independent work Computer/Internet work (multimedia presentation, internet searching, downloading, importing, etc.) Differentiation Not explicitly stated Given the independent nature of this unit, students are provided with individualized support/enrichment as necessary 6 Shifts/CCR Capacities Text Complexity Analyzing the meanings of words/phrases, allusions/analogies, figurative/connotative language, etc. Representing messages in multiple modes Applying advanced technological skills.

Paper and pencil work Student choice for (graphic organizer, notes selection of poems and from audience) computer software

Transparent
