Exxelor PO-1020 Polyolefinic Modifiers

A High-Performing Modifier For Engineered Polypropylene

Glass Fiber Reinforced Compounds

Exxelor PO 1015 and PO 1020 are very efficient coupling agents for improving
adhesion between glass fibers and the polypropylene matrix in glass reinforced
polypropylene blends.

Key mechanical, thermal and

processing properties of these
polypropylene composites are
improved, specifically:

• Stiffness
• Elongation
• Impact Strength
• Flow

Grades in the Exxelor PO range are generally added at a low concentration level
varying from 1 to 5 % by weight of the polypropylene composite. Most glass fibers
available in the market place are coated with a sizing agent, amino-silane being
frequently used. The maleic anhydride group of the grades in the Exxelor PO range
can react with the amine functionality, chemically linking the glass fiber to the
modifier, while the polypropylene backbone co-crystallizes with the polypropylene
matrix. This mechanism allows stress transfer from the polypropylene matrix to the
fiber, promoting reinforcement.
Mineral Filled Compounds

Non fibrous fillers, such as mica, talc and kaolin, are inexpensive minerals which are
added to polypropylene compounds to either improve performance or reduce cost.

The addition of grades in the Exxelor PO portfolio to these polypropylene compounds

improves filler dispersion. Finished compounds with higher homogeneity, hence
excellent mechanical characteristics, may be obtained, compared to untreated
materials.

Adhesion to Polar Substrates

Grades in the Exxelor PO portfolio adhere particularly well to polar substrates.

Indeed, strong chemical bonds can be formed between the maleic anhydride group of
the Exxelor modifier and the polar groups of a wide range of common substrates.

Grades in the Exxelor PO portfolio function as adhesion promoters for bonding

polypropylene to metal in plastic coatings, as well as in tie resins for film applications
