Linking hope.
Treatment, Healing, and Education (THE) Center for Disordered Eatingis a tremendous resource and asset insupporting my patients along their journey to recovery. Eating disorders often leave patients feeling very isolated and vulnerable. It is difcult to take the necessary steps toward recovery. THE Center for Disordered Eating is a unique local resource that makes those steps less isolating and scary. My patients have found comfort and strength in the weekly support groups led by local professionals with expertise in eating disorders. THE Center also provides resources and information for my patients to help them nd the help that they need to battle their eating disorders. I am also impressed with the work THE Center does in community education and outreach which is so vital in prevention of eating disorders. We are lucky to have such an organization in this community. -Dr. Emily Diznoff, Asheville Family Medicine

Among the many valuable programs offered by THE Center for Disordered Eating, one particularly memorable collaboration with UNC Asheville drew students, educators, and community members to our campus to learn more about this critically important topic. In the United States, 20 million women and 10 million men suffer from a clinically signicant eating disorder at some time in their life, including Anorexia, Bulimia, Binge Eating Disorder, and Eating Disorder Not Otherwise Specied (EDNOS). The number of people who struggle with an eating disorder have been increasing signicantly since 1950. Eating disorders dont discriminate. They affect non-Hispanic whites, Hispanics, AfricanAmericans, and Asians at similar rates. Most people with an eating disorder also struggle with one or more other psychiatric disorders which can complicate treatment and make recovery more difcult. Dieting & body dissatisfaction are among the greatest risk factors for the development of an eating disorder. Eating disorders affect over 30 million people but only receive $28 million in government funding for research. In contrast, Alzheimers affects 5.1 million people and receives $450 million. The treatment cost of an eating disorder in the United States ranges from $500 to $2,000 a day. 35-57% of adolescent girls engage in crash dieting, fasting, self-induced vomiting, diet pills, or laxatives. One-third of teenage boys use unhealthy weight control behaviors such as skipping meals, fasting, smoking cigarettes, vomiting, and taking laxatives.

As a spouse of someone struggling with an eating disorder,

it is hard to nd another spouse or parent that can relate to my experiences. T.H.E. Center for Disordered Eating provides an opportunity each month for me to connect with others who are "walking in my shoes", which is a great help for family members dealing with the stresses an eating disorder brings. Without T.H.E. Center, I would not have this valuable experience. -CL
