ASSIGNMENT1 : TOPIC 2 1. Calculate the geometric elements of a parabolic section with a cross-sectional area of 10.

0 m2 and a top width of 4 m. If a trapezoidal section with a 4.0 m bed width and 3:2 side slopes replaces the section, calculate the depth of flow, top width, hydraulic radius, and section factor.
2.

A triangular channel with slide slopes of 1:1 carries a discharge of 4 m3/s with a velocity of 0.74 m/s. Evaluate the geometric elements of the channel. Determine flow condition of this channel. A rectangular channel is 4 m wide and 2.5 m channel depth. The water in the channel is 1.75 m deep and is flowing at a rate of 21 m3 /s. Determine the area of flow, wetted perimeter and hydraulic radius. Is the flow laminar or turbulent?

3.

4. An earth canal section (shown in Figure 4) is 17m wide at the bottom and has side slope of 2H:1V. One side slope extends to a height of 7.8m above the bottom level and the other side extends to an elevation of 1.8m, then extends flat to a distance of 150m and rises vertically as shown in Figure 1. The bed slope of the canal is 0.7/1610 m/m. Assuming n for trapezoidal =0.014 and n for rectangular channel 0.02, i. estimate the discharge when the depth of flow is 2.5m. ii. determine ne.

Figure Q4 5. Starting from upstream to downstream, following data is collected for a 1.5 km long portion of a natural river. Determine the equivalent bed slope using Arithmetic Mean Method and Johstone Cross Method. Find the percentage of difference between these two methods.
