Rhetorical Analysis

The article Ideal Based Cyber Security Technical Metrics for Control Systems by Wayne Boyer and Miles McQueen, explains why Cyber Security Metrics are essential in todays electronic media life. They are able to persuade the reader that security metrics are crucial to any individual who utilizes the internet. The reference that they provide in their article obtain evidence for their persuasive statements.

Audience The audience involved in this topic are, organizations who are fighting against cybercrime, victims of cybercrime, and anybody else in the community who does not want to become a victim of this atrocity. The whole community is involved in this complication because it has caused trouble all over the planet. Therefore, there is no specific audience regarding this topic. Although the organizations who are trying to diminish it and the individuals who have been actual victims can be considered the primary audience.

Ethos Miles McQueen is the current Chief Scientist of Cyber Security at the University of Idaho. He is associated with organizations like DOE Cyber Sciences Laboratory and Instrumentation, Control and Intelligent Systems. The other author of the article, Wayne Boyer, is a Computer Software Engineer at IBM. With much experience in the Cyber Crime field, Wayne Boyer and Miles McQueen have the authority to state that, Control systems and the associated critical infrastructure are at risk from cyber attacks (2007). This quote shows the knowledge that these two individuals acquire regarding this topic. One can notice that research galore has been accomplished by these two computer experts. Wayne and Miles know exactly

together and are able to provide evidence about their statements makes them more credible than any one person who is attempting to persuade a small group or community by only stating their own opinions and not having proof that what they have announced is actually a fact.

Pathos The criminals have worked against everything that the cybercrime organizations have worked so hard to build, and they do not care who gets hurt in the process. Make no mistake, the hackers are the enemies and they will not stop until they have received what they are seeking; with the ambition of many, this might seem endless. The place where these delinquents need to be is in no other place other than prison. Once the prisoners time is fully served and are released, computer and internet restrictions need to be applied in order to prevent more felonies from the same individual. Many more consequences should be administered since many organizations that deal with cybercrime went through various difficulties in order to acquire the responsible being or group for this assault. People who have been victims and are against cybercrime need to get involved in organizations that prevent these types of scenarios and a positive outcome will be presented. According to Wayne Boyer and Miles McQueen (2007) Because of the complexity of network control systems and the unpredictable nature of intelligent adversaries, a credible quantitative measures of security risk is not currently feasible. He then says it is possible to minimize crimes regardless of the stated quote. Therefore, the people who care about their security and feel emotional towards this situation should act fast and help prevent it.

Any human being who is aware of his or her actions does not need to jump off a bridge in order to figure it is a bad idea. Why then would someone commit an atrocity in order to find out if it is legitimate or not? If one desires to be wealthy, one works to achieve that. The effort and dedication of an individual is what will be granted in return (if it is the legal way of course). If a hacker works extremely hard to obtain finance information from other internet users, why not put that same effort in order to acquire the same amount of wealth or even more. The victims involved can also use some common sense by securing their own personal computers; using an antivirus for example. By accomplishing this, the hackers will be obligated to pursue a much higher level of handiwork. This will diminish the pace of many criminals, but the more sophisticated ones will carry forward with their atrocities. These organizations can only do so much to prevent these crimes. Computer and internet users need to assist themselves from crime as reported by Wayne Boyer and Miles McQueen (2007), Users must be sure that the information they are receiving is correct, accurate and timely. Many individuals and organizations do not believe it is possible for their systems to get hacked. Since many of these agencies are not known worldwide, one assumes that the criminals will never attempt a crime against them. This overconfidence leads to ignorance because the computer systems are left unsecure and is what attracts the hackers. A system that is not secure is the system that catches the attention of the criminal; those will always be the first targets of the cyber mobsters. Reasons like these are why it is crucial for this community to utilize their common sense.

Boyers and McQueens article explained why it crucial for the community to protect their computer systems as much as possible. The authors had some credible points throughout and were able to make conclusions to their own results.
