Pengertian
Sensor adalah alat untuk menditeksi adanya perubahan fisik pada suatu objek dan merubahnya menjadi Signal yang dapat diukur atau disimpan. Transducer adalah alat untuk mentransfer Signal dari satu sistem ke sistem lainnya baik dalam bentuk Signal yang sama atau bentuk Signal lainnya. Sensor merupakan alat perabanya sedangkan Transducer merupakan Sensor plus sirkit yang digunakannya. Ada sebagian Sensor yang juga menghasilkan Signal dan berperilaku sebagai Transducer. Semua Transducer mengandung Sensor, dan tidak semua Sensor berfungsi sebagai Transducer. Signal merupakan istilah yang dipakai menggambarkan adanya satu bentuk energi yang berubah sebagai fungsi dari ruang dan waktu.

Transducer yang menghasilkan sendiri sinyal listrik yang langsung bisa amplifikasi dan diproses lebih lanjut. (Contoh: Thermocouple)

Active/Modulating Transducer
Transducer yang memerlukan sumber energi agar dapat merespon sinyal yang diterimanya. (Contoh: Photoconducive Cell)

Modifier Transducers
Transducer yang menghasilkan bentuk sinyal yang sama dengan yang diterimanya (Contoh: Pressure Gauge)

Least Detectable Signal

LDS adalah input signal yang menghasilkan signalto-noise ratio=1, dengan demikian, detectivity-nya menjadi: d = 1/(LDS).
Respone Time: waktu yang diperlukan sebuah transducer untuk mencapai 63 persen dari nilai akhir (linear), atau mencapai puncaknya (non-linear).
