Alef Bais Recognition Assessment Sheet

By Mrs. Simy Emaleh-Bitton
Grade Level: Early Childhood - 1st Grade, Special Ed Description: This handy assessment sheet makes it simple to evaluate how well students know the names and sounds of each letter in the Hebrew alphabet. It features a chart which allows you to easily distinguish between those letters which the students got correct and those that they did not, as well as which letters they were hesitant about, etc. It is a great resource as it allows you to gauge exactly where the student is holding and/or how much they have progressed since the last assessment. A tool every alef bais teacher should make use of! Goals/Objectives: Teachers will evaluate the children's academic level of his/her knowledge of letters and their sounds. Instructions: 1. Print one copy of the alef bais pages and one assessment form per student. 2. Take one child at a time and have him/her read the reading page telling you only the names of the letters. Then go back to the beginning and do only the sounds. 3. After students finish reading the words and the sounds, give them a sticker. 4. Calculate the results and work on the letters which need strengthening. Variations: A similar chart can be made for recognition of Rashi letters. Script writing can also be evaluated using an assessment sheet with slightly more variation. One part of the evaluation should be the child forming the script letters and the other part of the evaluation should be the child identifying script letters. Additional Tips: Positive reinforcement is crucial. If students get a letter/sound correct praise them to no end. If they didn't get the letter/sound right, tell them that they are getting there and they are doing great. This will give them the encouragement to try and continue on without tuning you out and giving up!
