ASHTANGASANA

Eight-limbed Pose

Ashtangasana Variations

This asana is mistakenly believed by some to be an easier pose than Chaturanga Dandasana. Although Ashtangasana does not necessarily require the upper body strength to preform it properly, this "crooked" pose can be demanding on both the lower and upper back, shoulders and elbows at the same time. The chin, hands, chest, knees, feet and bottom in the air create the eight limbs of the pose. This post is frequently called "Caterpiller."

This asana is also known as Astapadasana (Eight-Footed (Beast) Pose,) or the fabulous animal, Sarabha.
