Adaptation of respiratory structure of fish

The exchange of gases in fish occurs in the gills. Each gill is made up of 2 rows of fine filaments supported by a gill arch. Each filament consists of numerous lamellae. The total surface area of filaments is large due to their large numbers. This increases efficiency of gases exchange. The thin membrane of the filaments facilitates the diffusion of gases. The filament has abundant blood capillaries to hasten transportation of gases in the body. The filament is surrounded by water which enables gases to dissolve easily.
