and Processing Information http://libproxy.umflint.edu:2063/stable/view/3515984 The Web as an Information Resource in K-12 Education: Strategies for Supporting Students in Searching and Processing Information Els Kuiper, Monique Volman and Jan Terwel Review of Educational Research Vol. 75, No. 3 (Autumn, 2005), pp. 285-328 Published by: American Educational Research Association Keywords: Secondary Education Internet as information source Information literacy Internet use in classroom Quotations: The web does not support the learning processes of students (Kuiper et al, 2005, p. 284). For the first time in the history of education, it cannot be assumed that teachers are ahead of their students in a particular field (Kuiper et al, 2005, p. 286). With the continued emergence of new technologies, learning will be less about knowledge residing in the head and more about learning the pathways to knowledge (Kuiper et al, 2005, p. 284). First students must develop search skills, as well as skills to use effectively the information that they find (Kuiper et al, 2005, p. 300). Students experience the lack of acknowledgement of their skills as negative and disappointing and are hence less motivated to use the Internet at school (Kuiper et al, 2005, p. 304). The web offers users more opportunities to work interactively than printed media (Kuiper et al, 2005, p. 306). Summary: Overall, Kuiper states that the web is a great tool to utilize in the classroom, however the web does not support the learning processes of students ( Kuiper et al, 2005, p. 285). Kuiper states that students need support in searching the web as well as developing informational literacy. It is imperative for educators to help students learn how to make the Internet useful in their learning processes. One strategy is to teach students search strategies on the web. Kuiper states that many students have difficulties using key terms to search for information. Teaching them how to use key terms, access indexes, and promoting the browsing of the Internet will help. Kuiper also states that the Internet can

make new ways of learning available to students, which will stimulate students to be active, self-directed and exploratory learners. Teaching students about links on a webpage will also help. Another strategy that will help students is instruction and supervision. Kuiper states that students were able to find information easier and were less confused when teachers limited to a select website or two. Kuiper talks about the lack of technology used in classrooms because of some teachers fear of technology. It is also states that for the first time in history, the teacher is not the master of something in the classroom, students technical computer skills are usually higher than of the teacher. A good strategy to incorporate is allowing a student led computer assignments. One advantage of using the Internet in the classroom is the vast amount of information on the Internet. The Internet can be used as a tool to find useful information. Another advantage is the Internet has to students. Students positive attitude about the Internet, results in students being more engaged and involved. Overall, Kuiper states that the Internet offers more opportunities to work interactively and when effectively used, can benefit students in the classroom.
