TYPE 1 – SUMS & AVERAGES TYPE

Try these examples as practice to the problems already done in the


presentation. They are of similar type and difficulty. I will update this with
more problems as and when I find them.

The time limit to this problem set is 15 mins

1. A shipping clerk has 5 boxes of different weights but each less than 100
kg. The clerk weighs the boxes in pairs. The weights obtained are 110, 112,
113,114,115,116,117,118,120 and 121 kg. What is the weight of the
heaviest box?

A) 60 kg

B) 62 kg

C) 64 kg

D) Cannot be determined

2. At the finals of a contest with 5 participants, C1, C2, C3, C4, C5 . Before
the results, 6 mischievous persons A,B,C,D,E & F got hold of the results and
announced the sum of 4 of the contestants each as 220,260,230,240,210
and 250 respectively. However, one of them made a mistake in the addition.
Also, the organizers decided to award Rs 10,000 for each point scored by a
contestant. (The scores are integers)

(i) What is the highest possible amount a contestant can win?

a) Rs 7 lakh

b) Rs 7.5 lakh

money that is given away?

b) 29.5 lakh

(iv) If two of the contestants put together are eligible for 15 lakh, then who
made the mistake?

Now, as discussed in the presentation, let the boxes be named A<B<C<D<E in


ascending order of weight.

Now, 4(A+B+C+D+E) = 1156

A + B + C + D + E = 1156/4 =289

110 + C + 121 = 289

So, C = 58

Now, we know that D+E is greatest combination followed by C+E

So, C + E = 120 => E = 120 – 58 = 62 kgs.

So, answer is (b)
