Is the consumption of caffeinated beverages related to the number of hours of sleep for SLCC students?

This is the research question that my group chose to look into for this project. The purpose of the study is to see if caffeinated drinks affect the amount of rest or lack of, for SLCC students. To find out if there is a relationship between caffeinated beverages and rest for SLCC students, our group created a questionnaire which was passed out to students systematically. We each selected a random number between 1 and 10, mine was three. When we got to our assigned campus we would then survey that person and each (x) person after that. So for me I interviewed the third person and the counted to ten people and then started again at one and then interviewed the next third person until I received ten completed surveys. We made sure to include all campuses in the Salt Lake area. There were two researches at Redwood Campus one at South Salt Lake and two at the Jordan Campus. Please see attached table of data. 1ST Data set - Ounces of Caffeine consumed in a 24 hour period: Mean = 26.13 ounces Standard deviation=27.29 Five number summary = 0,8,18,36,128 Range = 128 Mode = 0 Outliers = 80,80,80,84,84,90,128 Histogram

I wasnt really surprised to see that there was not much relation found between the amount of caffeine a person consumes and the amount of sleep they receive. I think there are much larger factors when understanding peoples sleeping habits. The correlation between these two variables was only -.006 which is very near zero as to say there is only a slight relationship between them. The critical value for this sample size is .2245 which also shows there is no real relationship between these two variables. This brings us back to our original question. Is the consumption of caffeinated beverages related to the number of hours of sleep for SLCC students? And the answer for that is that there is only a very small relationship between the consumption of caffeine and the amount of sleep an individual receives. There are many other factors that may affect a persons sleep such as if they have kids or if they work two jobs or maybe they have a medical condition which affects their sleep. Also if a person gets up early and drinks some caffeine in the morning and not at night the caffeine may not be a factor for them any longer. I feel like our sample did represent the students at SLCC because of the systematic way we collected the random data. We covered most of the campuses and at different times during the day on different days. If I were going to research this issue more I would ask more specific questions like the time of day that they consume caffeine.
