Semester I, 2012/2013 Denition 1. Let f be a real-valued function dened on some subset of R. A function F satisfying F 1 f is called an antiderivative or indenite integral of f . A function may have several antiderivatives. More precisely, if F is an antiderivative of f , then so is F ` c where c P R is constant. The symbols f or f pxq dx denote an antiderivative of f . The following table gives expressions for the antiderivatives of some standard functions in their respective domains. The constant of integration is omitted. f p xq f p xq a xk x1 ex sin x cos x sec2 x csc2 x tan x cot x sinh x cosh x sech2 x csch2 x tanh x coth x ax ln|x| ex cos x sin x tan x cot x ln|sec x| ln|sin x| cosh x sinh x tanh x -coth x ln cosh x ln|sinh x| 1

Theorem 2 (Antiderivative of a Linear Combination). Let f and g be realvalued functions dened on X R and let a and b be xed real numbers. If both f and g possess antiderivatives, then so does af ` bg , and paf ` bg qpxq dx a f pxq dx ` b g pxq dx.
