Using switches and toys in class
I have a group of eight pupils in a mixed year one and year two class. Their ability level is
around P4 in most areas of the curriculum.
As part of the ‘listening’ aspect of our Science focus on using our senses, we used a selection
of noisy, switch activated toys. These included a drumming bunny, a quacking duck, a funky
gorilla and a pig. After the pupils had taken turns to play with the toys, I hid them under a
cloth, leaving the switches exposed.
Each pupil took a turn to choose a switch to activate and after listening to the noise the toy
made, either used spoken language to tell me which toy it was, or used photographs of the
toys to point to. We then removed the cloth to find out if they were correct. All the pupils found this an exciting, fun activity and
were very motivated by the toys. Using switches enabled me to create an activity that fully included each pupil and motivated them
to take part. And it was so much more fun than listening to those tapes of noises around the home!
I’ve also used switches to enable all pupils to access toys that spin or turn, such as the
‘twirl o paint’, in our Science topic on ‘pushes and pulls’. In Maths, with a group of year
two pupils whose ability ranged from P2ii – P7, I created an inclusive counting activity
with a BIGmack. This was recorded with “Ready… one, two, three, four, five”. One pupil
was working on using BIGmacks in a range of situations at a simple cause and effect level.
She was in charge of the BIGmack and once she activated it, we all joined in counting and
tapping the table to the count. What a fantastic effect! She’d look up and smile broadly,
often giggling at the response. And the rest of the group were learning to rote count or
match a counting name to the tap on the table.

Which software?
...cont.
The program you choose depends upon
the individual child. When learners are
first experiencing cause and effect it is
important to choose software which the
learner finds stimulating. We need to give
them a motivating reason to press the
switch and this is usually some kind
of reward - often a short sequence of
music, sound and animation. For example,
pressing a switch in Big Bang can fill the
screen with colourful animated graphics
and music.
Unlike touch monitors where the effect is
very direct and happens under the child’s
fingertips, switches are a much more
remote method of accessing a computer.
For some this can make it more difficult
for them to understand that their switch
press is controlling what is happening on
the screen.

Case study – Jenny
Best described as a ‘people person’, Jenny has profound and multiple learning
difficulties and responds best when interacting directly with other people
around her. Jenny had shown little or no interest in using the computer.
After speaking to her parents, we learned that Jenny really enjoyed listening
to her Mum singing nursery rhymes. A BIGmack was sent home with Jenny
and her Mum used this to record a short song. The BIGmack was used the
following day in the classroom and Jenny responded really well, showing
obvious signs of pleasure… smiling and vocalising. Initially Jenny required
lots of encouragement and ‘hand over hand’ prompting, which helped model
the movements that Jenny would need to press the switch independently. Jenny
made good progress with this and Mum was happy to change the song on the
BIGmack every couple of days.
When we felt that Jenny was ready, we moved her over to the computer and
created a simple slideshow using SwitchIt! Maker 2. Jenny’s Mum provided some digital photographs of Jenny at home with her family
and recorded more nursery rhymes, this time using a cheap MP3 voice recorder we bought from Tesco for £14.99. Jenny loved seeing her
family on the screen and listening to her Mum’s singing and within a couple of weeks she was pressing the switch independently.
• TIP: It should be remembered that for some learners, the reward for pressing the switch might not be looking and listening to the
on-screen animation, rather the reward is the reactions of the people working with them. A lovely example of this was seen recently
where a child was using SwitchIt! Farm Extra, and pressing a switch to see and hear the farm animals. Each time the child pressed
the switch to reveal a new animal, the support assistant performed the Makaton sign and did her own version of the animal noise,
something the child found incredibly entertaining.

On most occasions the benefits are considerable, but alternatives
may be needed for some users. Recent research has shown that
some children will respond much better when using photograph

had a considerable impact on the production of communication
materials. Photograph based materials can be produced using

Developing keyboard skills
Whether a child uses a physical keyboard or an
on-screen version, it helps if they know their way
around the keys.
For pupils with learning difficulties, a keyboard
with lowercase letters (page 76) can help with letter
recognition. Alternatively, you could customise
your keyboard using lowercase stickers (page 77).
Colour coded keys can also help to jog the child’s
memory (were they looking for a green key?) and
are useful when giving verbal prompts. The Jumbo
XL (page 75) uses bright green for consonants,
purple for vowels and yellow for punctuation keys.
Another option is the Kidglove (page 77). This
removable, transparent sleeve has lowercase stickers
on the inside. The alphabet keys are very clear and
other keys, which might distract, can be blanked
out with removable stickers. There are high contrast
gloves for those with low vision too.

Learning to type
To use a word processor effectively, we need to learn how to use
a keyboard. Keyboards come in all shapes and sizes to meet the
specific needs of the child. For example, young children or those
children with some level of dyspraxia may benefit from a keyboard
with larger keys, such as the Jumbo XL. Those with only one useable
hand or very restricted movement might benefit from a smaller
keyboard, such as the Compact or Ultra Compact Keyboard (pictured
bottom right). Pupils with poor vision might require a high contrast
or large print keyboard to help them see the letters. There is an
enormous choice and as with any technology, the choice of keyboard
should always be informed by the needs of the child.
Ask 100 people why the keyboard has a QWERTY layout and almost
all of them will tell you it is to speed up typing. While this was true
back in 1878 when the typewriter was first patented - the QWERTY
layout reduced the number of times it would jam - in 2007, it leaves
us with a slight problem. Children learn the sequence of letters in the
alphabet at a very early age, ABCDE etc. However, when they come to use a keyboard, the sequence
of letters they have learned is all jumbled up, making it much harder for them to find the letter
they require. Keyboards are available in ABC layout, and for some children it may help them learn
their way around the keyboard more quickly. However, the rest of the world outside of school uses
QWERTY keyboards and there is a compelling argument that we should use ‘standard’ keyboards
wherever possible, as our pupils are unlikely to find ABC layout keyboards in the ‘real’ world.
