Date Chain
Source: Umm Layla http://ummlayla.blogspot.com/2005/10/ramadan-craft.html (Visit the Umm Laylas blog for detailed images and step-by-step instructions.)

Materials Needed: 2 rolls colored cellophane Dates Curling ribbon Piece of cardboard

Instructions: First you cut a piece of cellophane in a rectangle (half the length of the roll and about 6 inches tall) and lay the dates in it. Then you roll the dates up like a cigar. Then you tie either end like a tootsie roll. Then, you fold the roll in half and tie a ribbon towards the dates to make a cellophane loop. And you nee to repeat the first steps until you have 30 bunches. Now, you use a ribbon and connect the bunches by their loops. Be sure to have all the loops facing the same direction. And, tie the ribbon in a bow so the kids can just pull one end of the bow to release the bunch for the day. Finally, secure the whole thing to a piece of cardboard through 2 holes and two pieces of the ribbon looped through the last cellophane hole.

Elegant Candle
Source: http://www.kaboose.com Materials Needed: Candles - drip less are the best. The candles can be any length. Hot glue gun Glitter hot glue sticks - you can buy these at any craft or fabric store.

Instructions: Select a candle and glitter glue stick that is the color combination you want. Put the glitter glue stick in the hot glue gun and let it warm up. After the glue gun is warm just squeeze the glitter glue all over the candle (except for the wick and the bottom). You can make a pattern on the candle with the glue or just scribble the glitter glue all over the candle. This dries really fast but make sure to not get the glitter glue too far down to the bottom of the candle, as you want it to fit in a candleholder. This can make some very elegant candles depending on the color combination you use. One parent suggests that a red candle with gold glitter glue is quite striking.

Dates from Tree to Table

Source: http://www.crayola.com Materials Needed: Colored pencils Glue Scissors File folders

Instructions: Create a triarama display to show your understanding of the role that date palms play in the observance of Ramadan and Eid al-Fitr. Open a recycled file folder and cut it into a square with Scissors. Fold the square into a triangle, and then fold it the other direction to make a smaller triangle. Open the file folder and cut along any one of the new folds from the edge into the center of the square. Slide the two triangles on either side of the cut on top of one another to form a floor and two-sided corner. Flatten out, noting which sides are walls and which triangle is the floor. With Colored Pencils, draw a scene of breaking the fast on the two walls. Include dates and water or other details. Add more visual information to indicate the time of day and location of the home. Decorate the floor of the triarama with a rug. Pop up your triarama and use Glue to seal the bottom triangle under the floor. On another piece of file folder, draw a date palm tree, ripe with dates ready to be picked. Cut another small piece of file folder and fold it to fit behind the trunk for support. Glue in place. Attach the tree to your scene.

Fanoos
Source: http://www.americasmuslimfamily.com Materials Needed: Cardstock paper Metallic paper Colored tissue paper Scissors Ruler Pencil Hole puncher Glue stick

Instructions: Print out template (http://www.americasmuslimfamily.com/hullabaloo/fanoos/fanoos.html) on card stock or heavy paper, (if your printer will accept heavier paper or card stock, otherwise print it on regular paper and glue it to card stock-be sure to glue entire surface of paper!) Cut on the solid lines and score and fold on the dashed lines (score by using a straight edge and a pen and heavily mark on the lines on the inside of your fanoos, this makes it easier to fold it up in the end). Cut out the gray rectangles or cut any shapes you like, keeping in mind you want the colors to show through when youre done. You may want to ask an adult to cut them out with a craft knife instead of scissors. Use a hole puncher or a craft punch to cut out shapes in the top portions of your lantern. Using a glue stick paste around the holes youve made and cover them with brightly colored tissue paper. Glue or tape a piece of ribbon or yarn to the top of your fanoos. Coat the inside of the A flaps with your glue stick.

Ramadan Crafts 2007 Compilation by Umm Nassim

Begin folding your fanoos, by lining up the A flaps over the B flaps-1 through 4. You may have to insert a pencil or your finger inside the final flaps so you can press the flap down on something firm. Hang your fanoos in a sunny window and youll see the colors light up! DO NOT PLACE NEAR A LIGHT OR FLAME!

High Ceiling Mosaic

Source: http://www.crayola.com Materials Needed: Paint brushes Metallic pencils Model Magic Glue Glitter glue Scissors Newspaper Toothpicks Boxes/cardboard

Instructions: With Scissors, cut thin cardboard to fit over a box opening to be a faade. Cut an arch from the middle. Save the cutout piece. Roll a sheet of blue or white Crayola Model Magic. Roll smaller sheets of white, green, or other colors. Cut the small sheets into tiny pieces. Press these "tiles" into the first sheet to create a mosaic pattern. If you wish, use a toothpick to create a honeycomb effect in the mosaic. Lay the box on its back and fill it with lightly crumpled newspaper. Drape the mosaic over the top of the newspaper (when it dries it will hang from the top of the box like a vaulted ceiling). Attach the mosaic to the box with Glue. Air-dry the mosaic at least overnight. With Crayola Metallic Colored Pencils, decorate the cardboard faade and cutout piece in Arabic style with geometric and calligraphy designs. Use a Paint Brush to smooth on a thin layer of Glitter Glue to adorn the design. Air-dry the glue. Mix and roll out more Model Magic for the portals floor and sidewalls. For a marbleized effect, mix blue and white together just a bit. Air-dry the sheets. To assemble your portal, remove the newspaper. Glue the cutout arch piece to the back of the box. Glue the Model Magic sheets to the floor and walls. Glue the faade to the front. Air-dry your beautiful work of architecture!

Henna Cones
Source: Sister Blake Materials Needed: Scissors Tape Mylar wrap Cellophane Rotary cutter and mat Basket wrap Small rubber bands Long pointy item (chopstick, skewer)

Instructions: If you are using Mylar tissue, keep hands moisturized, as you can not roll tissue Mylar if the humidity is low and your hands are dry, too much static electricity makes the tissue unmanageable. Cut Mylar tissue into 6x7 inch rectangles. Continue rolling till the cone is formed, using a small push pull motion to make the cone the length and width you like. When you come to the last bit, shift and pull the cone until the opening at the tip is the size you like. This can be adjusted until the opening is as small as a pin whole. Tape down the little tail, the 1 1/2 inches left over at the tip. Cut a small square piece of tape and wrap it around the very tip of the cone. This will hold the teensy, tiny opening in place and prevent any slippage or unwrapping.

Ramadan Crafts 2007 Compilation by Umm Nassim

11

Tape over the seam on the outside using 2 pieces of tape approximately 1 1/2 inches long. Using a long item such as a chopstick or long pointy scissors, put a piece of tape inside the cone as far down as you can get it, place another piece further up the inside of the cone to secure the inside of the cone and keep it from unrolling as you use it. Your cone is now complete. You can fill 3-4cones with henna paste if you begin with 20 grams of dry powder. Fill the cone 1/2 to 2/3 rd's of the way with several tablespoons of henna. Give the cone one twist just above the paste and seal with a tiny rubber band. Scoot the rubber band down the length of the cone as you use it to keep the pressure consistent. These cones will last all day at an event without unrolling, unraveling, or developing sloppy, large tips.

Mobile: Masjid
Source: http://www.submission.org Materials Needed: Thin poster board Scissors Pencil Colored glitter Gold and silver glitter Glue String or ribbon

Instructions: Make a copy of an Islamic Design, for example a drawing of a simple masjid with a minaret, like the one above. The poem can be split into two halves, with each half glued to the right or left side of the door of the mosque in the diagram, i.e. on top of the area of the windows in the diagram. Make additional copies after you have glued the poem inside for the amount of children participating. Glue pictures to thin cardboard, and then cut out around the outline of the masjid. Have children color and/or decorate with colored glitter. Punch a hole in the top of the mosque and tie a long string or ribbon through it to hang from the ceiling.

Ramadan Calendar II
Source: Umm Layla http://ummlayla.blogspot.com/2006/09/ramadan-craft.html (Visit Umm Laylas blog for images of the step-by-step instructions)

Materials Needed: 1 yard of 54 inch wide felt 2 36 inch long 3/4 inch dowels 8 pieces of 9"x12" felt Number and letter stencils Paint and brush for stencils Glue gun (or good fabric glue) Wooden decorations for the end of the dowels Whatever other little things you want to decorate the finished product with It is helpful to have a rotary cutter and guide... But of course scissors will work too. And you can buy numbers and letters in felt. Instructions: You cut the 9x12 pieces into four 4 1/2x6 pieces for the pockets. Square up your main piece of felt, making it about 34 inches wide. You will clip off the excess at the bottom later. Then, fold over the top and create a pocket for the dowel (an inch will do. Just glue it on the edge. Stencil on your lettering across the top. Lay out your pockets in rows of five alternating colors as you go. It is helpful to use a yardstick or some straight edge to keep you in line as you glue. Once you have all those pesky pockets glued stencil on all your numbers.

Ramadan Crafts 2007 Compilation by Umm Nassim

29

Now you need to trim off the bottom leaving enough room for the lower dowel pocket. Make that pocket the same way you did the one on the top. Then, put the dowels through and glue on whatever you choose for the ends on the top and bottom dowels. Now they are snug in place. Finally, add your decorations where you think they are needed and place a string on the top dowel to hang it. Then the fun part... Fill it with a little treat for every day of Ramadan!

Ramadan Collage
Source: http://www.theholidayspot.com Materials Needed: Pictures of masjids and minarets Blue, black and white construction paper Scissors Gold and silver glitter Glue Instructions: Let imaginations have free reign! You can either cut out the shapes using tracing paper on the images you've already collected. Or you can go for full-fledged collage by tearing paper into small pieces. And, then assemble them into the shape of familiar Ramadan signs. For instance, cut out the shape of the crescent moon from the white construction paper. Make stencils of masjids and minarets with the help of translucent tracing paper. And cut out shapes from the black construction paper using the stencil. Cut out a long strip of blue construction paper. Glue the white moon. Do it in a way so the moon tilts up sideways. Fix up plenty of star stickers, including one a little above the crescent moon. Create a skyline of silhouetted masjids and minarets jutting out their heads along the bottom line of the blue banner. Take a few small strips of blue paper. Write Ramadan with the help of a thick brush dunked in glue in various styles. Now pour plenty of glitters over the words. Fine-tune the glittery Ramadan with a clean piece of cloth and fingertip. Leave it to dry. And fix the banner on the wall.

More Ideas
Source: http://ourseeds.tripod.com/activities.html

Make your own prayer rugs. Take pillow cases decorate them with fabric paint. Do a hajj presentation. Make a Kabah model, wear white sheets and "do" hajj. Make small mosques out of boxes. Decorate them and then cut a small slot in the top so the boxes can be used as banks to hold loose change. Play a game called "Allah Says." Tell the kids something like, "Allah says do your prayers." And immediately the kids have to go through all the positions. Or say, "Allah says make wudhu." Make Kabah pop-up cards for Eid to give to friends & family. Make your own tin can luminary to light during the nights of Lailat Al Qadr. Make a moon phase calendar (picture or cutout of the moon for each day of Ramadan) and have an easy activity for the kids to do every day (like kissing mom or day, cleaning one's room, eating a goodie, recite one's favorite surah, tell something about Rasul Allah (salallahu alayhi wa salam). Make stained glass cookies using moon cutouts for center stained glass part. Make collage of things we do in Ramadan. Go to library, get a holiday crafts book and adapt activities to Ramadan theme. Make a list of good things that each child wants to do during Ramadan and do them. Learn an Islamic song or make up your own. Learn a rhythmic dhikr or make up a song about Ramadan, forgiveness, etc. Make a drum and/or tambourine to use in your songs and especially for Eid celebration. Learn how to calculate Zakat and have kids help you determine where the Zakat should go...let them give it also. Make a map of Makkah. Make girl and boy corn husk dolls, give them Islamic names and have your children write letters to them daily. Get a book about Islamic art and/or calligraphy and pick your favorite and try to reproduce it (at least on paper using crayons, colored sand, pieces of cut up construction paper for mosaic tiles, glitter glue, etc.) . String up lights either inside the house or outside to be plugged in at maghrib.
