Room 1043| (801) 231-4559 | Haydee.Speredon@slcschools.org COURSE DESCRIPTION: Career and Technical Education Introduction (CTE Intro) allows students through activity-centered lessons to utilize technology, develop beginning skills, and explore careers. The course provides information regarding additional courses and training related to each students career field of interest. Our vision is to offer every student the opportunity to experience technology used in the workplace, develop beginning life skills, and explore careers that will assist him or her in eventually choosing a career, while giving each student the encouragement to achieve his or her goals. The overall goals of CTE focus on 1) Self-Knowledge, 2) Education and Occupation Exploration, and 3) Career Planning. COURSE OBJECTIVES: The mission of Family and Consumer Sciences Education is to prepare students for family life, work life, and careers in family and consumer sciences. The curriculum for the FACS (Family and Consumer Sciences) portion of the CTE program involves the following areas of study: Family/Economics Students will learn about family types, traditions, sharing, conflict resolution and budgeting. They will become acquainted with the occupations related to this subject. Health Students will learn about simple medical equipment and gain a basic knowledge of some different medical professions. Child Care Students will learn about child care safety, how to care for small children, and what to look for in a child care provider and become acquainted with the occupations related to this subject. Career Development Students will explore career planning. Some lessons will be given by the teacher and others will be given by the School Counselor. Textiles Technology Students will learn the parts of the sewing machine, how to thread and operate a sewing machine, and become acquainted with the occupations related to this subject. They will make 2 sewing projects: a pencil case or apron and a backpack or locker caddy. Foods and Nutrition Students will learn about kitchen equipment, measurements and equivalents, cooking terms, and recipes and become acquainted with the occupations related to this subject. They will be making cookies and biscuits.

Free Enterprise Students will learn about the basic responsibilities of restaurant operation by having a simulated restaurant. They will have restaurant jobs serving each other. They will make a variety of sewing projects, service learning activities and participate in cooking labs. They will be giving a PowerPoint presentation, and be involved in group projects and class projects. Course Requirements Students will be actively participate in class discussion, answer questions, complete worksheets, and work in cooperative groups. Students will actively participate in class as a responsible young adult by being on time, being respectful to your student peers, coming to class with a positive attitude and being prepared. No cell phones/music devices will be allowed or in use in classroom Copies of the course materials such as the syllabus, major assignment handouts, etc. may be found on the right side of the classroom door this is the ASSIGNMENT WALL, assignments will always be available to make up when absent or tardy and it will be partial to full credit depending on circumstances (or other communication system as indicated by the instructor) ABSOLUTELY NO ROUGH HOUSING in the kitchen or by sewing machines or anywhere in class will be tolerated automatic Principal referral

At Clayton Middle School we pride in giving all our Students High Expectations which they meet. We expect that students take responsibility for their own education and be on time to class and attend school regularly and come prepared. Classroom Rules 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. 6. Be in assigned seat when bell rings. Be Proactive bring a great attitude to class and be ready to work Keep hands to self (and feet, paper, pencil, etc.). Listen to teacher (raise hand if you want to talk) and take turns talking Follow teacher instructions first time given and be attentive No swearing, horse playing, bullying, cell phones or ipod.

Consequences First offense (STRIKE 1) First verbal warning. Second offense (STRIKE 2) Second verbal warning. Third offense (STRIKE 3) Next day lunch detention. (Call to parent or guardian) Fourth offense INTERVENTION, (call to parent or guardian) and Administration Severe Clause In cases of severe discipline problem, go directly to Mr. Wright.

Citizenship Honors - outstanding conduct, no more than one unexcused tardy, courteous to everyone at all times, and prepared at all times. Satisfactory - Very good conduct, and responsible the majority of the time. Two or three unexcused tardies, comes prepared. Needs Improvement - Occasional poor conduct without student showing an effort to change, comes often unprepared to class, poor attendance, and/or 4 unexcused tardies. Unsatisfactory - Unacceptable conduct and behaviors with very poor attendance and/or 5 or more unexcused tardies, almost never prepared for class. This includes getting caught plagiarizing or cheating.

GRADING PROCEDURES: Sewing projects are worth many points, therefore, it is very important that students not only complete them, but do well on them. ATTENDANCE AND PUNCTUALITY HAVE A DIRECT BEARING ON GRADES AND CITIZENSHIP. Excused absences can be made up by doing missed assignments at home. Students will have ONE week to make up missed assignments without being marked late. It is students responsibility to get missed assignments because of absences. All assignment information will be on the Assignment Wall by the Door.

If student is absent, the missed assignments may be accessed from UEN website. Use the following instructions: go to http://my.uen.org/65036 on the main page, you will click on the CTE Introduction tab to find messages and assignments that you can download. Some of the assignments will have a key. These are used to get the answers that I give students in class to help them with the information they will need to complete that assignment or assignments to follow. This website will be updated daily. I will leave a message every day so please check for it. Another resource would be the class website. http://facssperedon.weebly.com Late-work Policy: Due date for assignments is usually the day after the assignment is given. The students will have one week after the assignment was given to turn in late work. However, late assignments after that date will only be worth 70% of the original amount. Please make sure assignments are neatly done and handed in on time. Extra-credit assignments will be accepted periodically throughout the term. Word searches are usually given as extra-credit and any additional projects made in class or at home will be accepted for extra credit. (Limited quantity) Grades will be updated once a week. Students will be notified of grade updates the day they are made. Students are required to keep track of their own grades on Power School.

Grading scale is as follows:

100 - 93% = A 92 - 89% = A88 - 85% = B+

88 - 85% = B+ 84 - 81% = B 80 - 77% = B-

71 - 68% = C 67 - 62% = C61 - 60% = D+

53 - 50% = D59 - 54% = D 49 - 0% = F
