Snake

All snakes have a tubelike body covered by scales. They dont have legs, so they mive on their belly. They have some special organs for hunting and have several well-developed sense organs that help them in findimg prey. Snakes have an inner ear, but no external opening. They cant hear but they can detect vibration in the ground in the ground through their lower jaw. They have pour vision and they dont have moveable eyelids. The eyes of snakes are especially adapted to detect quick movement. Snakes have a special organ in the mouth called Jacobsons organ. Jacobsons organ is a sense organ for smelling. They also have a thermorecep, called pit organ, on theor head between the eye and nostril. Its a heat detecting orgam. By using this organ, snakes can track and strike warm-blooded prey, even at night or in deep burrows. Snakes are carnivores.

They eat other animals and the eggs of other animals. They swallow their food whole even when the prey is much larger than their mouth, because their jaws unhinge. The structure allows the mouth to open very wide. The ribs of snakes are unattached at one end, so the snakes boy sterct to make room for the food. After a large meal, a snake may go for weeks or months without eating. Snakes have a bad reputation, because only 200 of the 2500 known species are poisonous. They produce venom, and they kill their prey by injecting them with special teeth called fangs. Venom is produced by special glands located in the head. Some poisonous snakes are the rattlesnake, cobra and eastern green mamba. Other snakes, such as boa constrictor and pyhton kill their prey by starngling it. Anaconda is the longest and most powerful snake in the world. An adult may be 6m long and weights 107kg. They kill their prey by constriction, or squeezing.

Tutara means spiny back in Maori. Tutara are reptiles but theyre very different frlm lizards, crocodiles and amphibians. They have scaly, loose skin which soft when touched. They have a variable body temperature which enable them to survive in cold climates. They live in burrows, and theyre noctrunal. They feed on wetas, worms, lizards, millipedes and small seabird. An adult can grow to up 24cm long and weight about 500grams. They lay about a dozen leathery-shelled eggs. Tutara mature at the age of 23 and they may live to be 60 years old.
