Candidate: Irene Navarro Content Area: Organization Subject Matter: Writing (Mini Lesson) Lesson Content Description: Students will continue to learn about organizing their writing in a logical way. The focus will be on selecting a graphic organizer that would be best to organize ones ideas. Type of Lesson: Direct Instruction Instructional Strategies/Method of Delivery: Direct Instruction, Review Content Standard: WRITING 1.2 Create multiple-paragraph expository compositions: a. Establish a topic, important ideas, or events in sequence or chronological order. ELD Standard: INTERMEDIATE COMPREHENSION Restate and execute multiple-step oral directions. Lesson Objective: All students will use a graphic organizer of their choice to plan for responding to an assigned writing prompt. Assessment: Formative: - Questioning throughout lesson (use popsicle stick method-pick students at random) -Think-Pair-Share (Partner Strategy) Summative: - Completed graphic organizer Lesson/Assessment Modifications: ELL: Special Needs ELL: visual support, seated with a bilingual student, partner support ADD: seated at the front of the class, visual support, Technology: Timer, Document Camera Date: 08/29/13[THURSDAY ] Grade Level: 5th Grade

INTO Anticipatory Set/Orientation State purpose of lesson -First, we will review capitalization rules in titles and quotations. Then, we will learn how to use graphic organizers. Do Common Core Standards Plus Worksheet, p.71 as a class -Go over rules and directions -Do #1 as a class (use different color pen to make editing marks) -For #2-#4, go over as a class and then set timer to give them time to write sentence out

State technology that will be used: Timer, Document Camera Re-state Content Standard and Objective in student friendly terminology: Must tie into Assessment By the end of the lesson, you will make a graphic organizer to help you organize your ideas before you write. Outline adaptations for EL and special needs students Partner support, Seated at the front of the class, Use different color for editing sentences

Modeling/Presentation (I do) Explain that there are different graphic organizers we can use -Visually show the 3 different organizers: drawing, web/chart, and cause & effect diagram -Explain the purpose of each graphic organizer Guided/Structured Practice (We do) Jot down ideas of what you can do for each graphic organizer as a class Checking for Understanding/Formative Assessment (They do) Go over Organization Worksheet: Page 51 (Part A) as a class Have them select which graphic organizer would be best for each assignment State technology that will be used (consistent in through): Document Camera Outline adaptations for EL and special needs students (consistent in through): Visual support, partner support, graphic organizers

Independent Practice/Summative Assessment/Closure Read Directions- Part B on Organization Worksheet Have them draw the graphic organizer of their choice Close lesson by showing some of students completed graphic organizers on document camera State technology that will be used: Document Camera Outline adaptations for EL and special needs students -Give more time to EL/special needs students -Scaffold them as they work independently on their worksheet
