7th Grade Quest Semester Course Syllabus 2013-2014

Throughout this 20-week program students will better understand the changes and emotions they are experiencing at this time in their lives. We will discuss positive solutions that may be used to help handle these situations. Units of Study: Unit 1 Entering the Teen Years Emotionally, Socially, Intellectually, and Physically *HIV and STIs are discussed at this time. There will be a letter going home about this that will be need to be signed and returned if you do not wish your child to be in the classroom while these topics are being taught. This material will still be on the unit test and the final, so it is recommended you go over it with your child at home if you have them removed from class for those lessons. Unit 2 Building Self-Confidence and Communication Skills Unit 3 Managing Emotions in Positive Ways Units 4 & 5 (These 2 units are combined.) Improving Peer Relationships & Strengthening Family Relationships Unit 6 Making Healthy Choices (Drugs and Alcohol)

Textbook Used: Lions-Quest Skills for Adolescence, Fourth Edition Materials Needed: folder, lined paper (notebook or loose-leaf), pencils, iPad (bring charged daily) Evaluation/Grade Calculations: There are tests given at the end of each unit, with the exception of the last unit. The last unit doesnt have its own test, but material from it will be included on the final exam. The unit tests and final exam make up 60% of the final grade. The remaining 40% of the grade comes from bell-work, in-class assignments, homework, and projects. Behavior Consequences: I believe that we can work together to manage any issue that arises in the classroom. If a problem arises, the following steps will be taken: 1. A verbal warning 2. A private talk between student and the teacher 3. A telephone call or email to parents 4. Lunch detention with teacher 5. Removal from the classroom for the hour; a principal will be involved.

Hall Passes: Students will be given 4 hall passes per quarter. After the 4 are used, they are not allowed to leave the room unless in the case of an emergency. Tardy Policy (per quarter): 3 tardies will result in a phone call or email to parent and a one category drop in citizenship grade. 6 tardies will result in an office referral and an additional category drop in citizenship grade. iPads: iPads will be utilized for educational purposes in this class. All students are expected to come prepared with personal iPads daily and to uphold the Student Technology Code of Conduct and only use the devices as directed by the teacher. Late Assignments: If you are absent, it is your responsibility to find out what assignments you are missing by checking the Blackboard website. Late assignments are worth credit unless due to an absence or used with a late homework pass. The student will have the opportunity to make up missing work in ZAP, but when handed in it will still only be worth credit. Movies: I will show a few PG/PG-13 movies such as Pay it Forward and Cheaper By The Dozen. These movies do use mildly inappropriate language.
