Course

Description: This Human Anatomy and Physiology class is designed to be a two-semester introductory college course. The goal of our class will be to provide you with the scientific principles, concepts, and methodologies required to understand the structural and functional aspects of the bodys parts and systems, as well as the connectedness of these parts and systems. We will also identify and analyze pathophysiological problems both natural and human-caused, evaluate the relative risks associated with these problems, and examine alternative solutions for resolving and/or preventing them. Text: Introduction to the Human Body: 6th edition, Gerald J. Tortora and Sandra R. Grabowski Contact Information: Science Office Phone Number: 516-441-4754 Ms. Pizaros Email Address: Lpizaro@greatneck.k12.ny.us Ms. Pizaros Office: Room 213 Class Website: www.pizaroscience.weebly.com Requirements: 1. Come to class on time. Each lateness counts as absence. School policy states that any student with more than 7 absences, either excused or unexcused, per marking period shall receive an Incomplete until all time and work is made up. Excessive absences will be made up during free periods and before/after school. 2. Come to class prepared. If you are absent from class, you are responsible for all assignments. You should find someone in the class that you can contact in the event of an absence. This homework buddy will take an extra copy of notes, class work, handouts, homework assignments, etc. for you so that when you return to class, you are not behind. Since this course is designed to be a preparation for college, you should be prepared to act like a college student and be accountable for all of your work. 3. Absences. If you are absent, it is your responsibility to contact your Homework Buddy before you return to class to ensure you have all necessary materials that you missed. If you have more than 7 absences in any one quarter, you will be required to make-up time. Failure to do so will result in an Incomplete on your report card and you will have two weeks to change that I into a grade, or it automatically becomes an F. Arrangements for make-up times will be made with me ahead of time, but it is strongly advised not to be in this position. 4. Respectful behavior at all times. All members of the class are expected to behave civilly towards each other at all times. Foul language, insults, inappropriate gestures/language, and unnecessary disruptions will not be tolerated. A warning may be given upon the first infraction, and then the person may be asked to leave the class. This will count as an unexcused absence and administration will be notified. 5. Electronics. No electronics may be used or may be visible during class. Turn all devices to the Off position or to Silent to ensure no class disruptions occur. Any student in possession of an electronic device that makes any sort of noise during quizzes or exams will receive an automatically 0 and their phone will be confiscated. If you are caught using your phone during class, I will confiscate it and you can retrieve it from me at 2:33pm that afternoon. No exceptions. 6. Participation in class discussions and activities. Please ask questions and share in our discussions. As long as your questions and comments are clean without using slang, then we can talk about it! 7. Turning in of homework assignments/projects on time. All homework assignments will be checked at the beginning of class. If you are late to class and homework has already been checked, you will receive half-credit (50%) for that assignment. All homework assignments must be typed. Failure to do so will result in an automatic grade of 50%. 8. Pop Quizzes. Unannounced quizzes may be given at any point throughout the year. These quizzes may or may not be open notebook, so you should be motivated to listen to class discussions, complete all assignments, and be an active participant in class. Open-notebook pop quizzes can be given any day of the week, not just on Science Testing Day. 9. Exams. All exams will be 1 class period in length (35-40 minutes) and will contain a variety of question types designed to test your understanding of the material covered in class. Exams will be open-notebook. However, YOU MUST USE YOUR OWN HANDWRITTEN COPY OF CLASS NOTES/DIAGRAMS. Exams will be announced as far in advance as possible. Although the material for each exam will be based on topics covered from the previous test to the present, earlier material will be required to be fully successful. You will need both a blue/black pen as well as #2 pencils for all exams. Science Testing Days are as follows: Semester 1: Wednesday & Semester 2: Thursday. Make-up exams are given on the day you return to class regardless of how long the absence was. 10. Grading. Course grades will be determined as follows: Tests = 60% Homework/Classwork = 10% Quizzes = 15% Projects = 15%
