Bornheimers 2nd Grade Discipline Policy

My classroom discipline policy/ reward program is based on the concept that has made us His forgiven children and that he wants us to show His love toward others, just as he has loved us. The Bible verse we will focus on is Matthew 5:15-17 Neither do people light a lamp and put it under a bowl. Instead they put it on its stand, and it gives light to everyone in the house. In the same way, let your light shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven. Wrongdoing with a task/activity 1. Talk with the child about what happened 2. Ask what he/she needs to do to resolve the problem (thinking time for the child) 3. Child returns to task with a new game plan Wrongdoing against a classmate 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. Talk with child about what happened Ask what he/she needs to do to resolve the problem Child apologizes to other child stating what he/she is sorry for Second child forgives stating I forgive you Return to tasks

**Repeated verbal or physical attacks against a classmate are considered to be bullying and will be handled according to the school bullying policy. ** To support the above, a visual poster with clothespins for each child is used: 1. Everyone starts the day on green Ready to Learn 2. Students may move up based on Letting their light shine, doing what they are supposed to etc. The colors blue Good Job! and Great Job and at the very top, pink for Outstanding. 3. Based on choices and behavior, students may move down to yellow Slow Down look at what you are doing. 4. Orange is Think About It and will result in loss of 5 minutes of recess 5. Red is Parent Contact- behavior warrants contact with parents, a note home to be signed. Students who move down to yellow or orange may move back up the chart to green, blue, or even pink. We are not stuck with the color (or behavior) that we are at!

Classroom Rewards

Based on this system, 2nd Graders will earn Let Your Light Shine Points everyday that they stay on Green or above. Points may also be earned for extra things a child does that shows them Letting their light shine Points may be redeemed for classroom prizes: 15 points: Special pencil or eraser, sticker sheet, bookmark 30 points: a new book! (any new or gently used books you might wish to donate would be helpful in this area )

This classroom discipline and reward system is meant to encourage students to let the Light of Jesus shine through them and to reinforce that even when we dont let our lights shine, we still find forgiveness in Jesus, who enables us to let our light shine. Rewards will be presented from this aspect, not as a competition to see who can do the most or who has the most points. You might ask your 2nd grader on a daily basis how they let their light shine today!
