COURSE OUTLINE- English 10 2013-2014
Course Overview English 10 incorporates the goals and objectives of the BC Provincial Curriculum; however, the course seeks to employ texts and develops skills of a more complex nature than those recommended by the Provincial Curriculum. In addition, considerable emphasis is put on critical and creative thinking. Overall, this course prepares students to develop sophisticated skills in reading, writing, researching, speaking and listening: reading critically and extensively; writing in a precise, complex, and correct way; researching using APA style and citing sources; speaking in a highly articulate manner; and listening actively and critically. Vocabulary is studied throughout the year by utilizing Wordly Wise 3rd edition and matters of grammar are taught in context throughout the year. Considerable emphasis is also placed on exam preparation. PLEASE NOTE: This is a provincially examinable course. The Provincial Exam will be written by all English 10 students on June 19, 2014. Term One Short Stories: Several short stories will be studied throughout the year; however, students will begin with a concentrated short story unit which will include the review of literary devices, literary analysis questions, and creative writing opportunities. Essay Writing: After focusing in detail on the formal elements required by this genre (including such things as thesis statements, sentence structure, paragraph structure, diction, and use of quotations), students will write a variety of essays, starting with the Summer Reading Essay. Novel Study: Students will study the dystopic novel, Fahrenheit 451, which will provide opportunities to focus on literary analysis and critical thinking skills.

Public Speaking: This will be a key focus of this term. Students will review research skills, speech writing skills, and presentation skills in detail. Students will present their speeches as part of the annual Public Speaking Competition later in this term. Term Two Play Study: We will read Shakespeare's Macbeth and focus particularly on the literary and dramatic elements of the text. In addition to looking at the language of Shakespeare and the historical context, students will enact some of the play and analyze film productions. Tests, quizzes and analytical essays will be written by the students to test their knowledge and comprehension of the play. Essay Writing and Research Skills: The compare and contrast essay will be introduced. Students will work on the following research skills: analysis of online sources, completion of an annotated bibliography, and the use of in-text citations. Term Three Literature Circles: Students will study a novel from a group of select titles. The class will divide into groups in a literature circle format. Poetry Unit: students will read poems provided in photocopied format. In addition to content, students will also discuss and analyze verse forms and use of literary devices. This unit will be ongoing throughout the year and help students to prepare for the potential poetry section of the provincial exam. Exam Preparation: A mock exam will be written in May in anticipation of the actual exam on June 19, 2014 Assessment Students will be assessed in a variety of ways throughout the course. The cumulative course mark is worth 70% of the final mark. The English 10 Provincial Exam is worth 30% of the final mark.
