Multiplication Strategies
DISTRIBUTIVE PROPERTY (Easier when multiplying single-digit by multi-digit) 1. Write the problem horizontally 2. Decompose the multi-digit factor into place value groups or numbers that are easy to multiply by the other factor 3. Multiply the decomposed numbers by the other factor 4. Add the totals together, this is your product 5. Circle your answer AREA MODEL 1. Draw a square or rectangle 2. Divide it horizontally and vertically into as many pieces as you have factorial digits 3. Multiply the numbers that correspond for each grid, and write the total inside the grid 4. Add all the numbers inside the grids (your partial products) together so you get your total product 5. Circle your answer

STANDARD ALGORITHM 1. Write the problem vertically 2. Multiply the ones together-carry any tens digit to the tens place above your top factor 3. Multiply the ones in the bottom factor by the tens in the top factor 4. Add any tens that was carried over 5. Before multiplying the tens from the bottom factor, place a zero in the ones column of your answer, under your ones digit from the first set of multiplication 6. Now continue to multiply the tens in the bottom factor by the ones in the top number-carry any tens digit to the tens place above the top factor 7. Multiply the tens digit of the bottom number by the tens digit of the top number and add any tens that was carried over 8. Add the two numbers together to get your final total 9. Circle your answer Grade 4 Math Parent Activity September 10, 2013

Division Strategies
PARTIAL QUOTIENT 1. Write the problem the way you write a traditional long division problem 2. Add a vertical line to the right to make room for your partial quotients 3. Ask yourself, How many groups of my divisor can be made from the dividend? 4. Write the number to the right of the vertical line 5. Multiply the number by the divisor 6. Subtract the product from the dividend 7. Look at how much is left 8. Ask yourself, How many groups of my divisor can be made from the difference 9. Write this number to the right of the vertical line 10. Multiply and subtract again 11. Continue until you can no longer divide 12. Add the partial quotients on the right side of the vertical line, this is your final quotient 13. Write it at the top and circle your answer DISTRIBUTIVE PROPERTY 1. Write the division expression horizontally 2. Decompose the dividend into friendly numbers (numbers that can easily be divided by your divisor) 3. Divide each of the parts separately by the divisor 4. Add the partial quotients together to get your final answer STANDARD ALGORITHM 1. Start with the largest place value, consider how many of the divisor there would be in that quantity (divide) 2. Write the number above the highest place value of the dividend 3. Multiply this number by the divisor 4. Record product below the largest place value in the dividend 5. Subtract 6. Bring down the next largest place value 7. Continue to divide, multiply, subtract and bring down for the remaining place values 8. Anything left is your remainder

Step-by-Step Model Drawing

1. Read the entire story. 2. Stop and think what the story is about. 3. Rewrite the question into a statement leaving space for the answer.

4. WHO and/or WHAT is the story about? 5. Draw your unit bar or bars. 6. Chunk the problem (reread the story sentence by sentence); adjust the unit bars (add any data that you know). 7. Put a ? in the proper place. (What is the question asking? 8. Write an equation and solve it. Put the answer in sentence. the
