Studio Art Syllabus

Course Description The Studio Art course is designed as an introduction to 2-Dimensional design. The course will introduce students to the practical and conceptual application of art. The goals of the Studio Art course are: To encourage creative and systematic investigation of formal and conceptual issues. To stress making art as an ongoing process that involves the student in informed and critical decision making. To assist students in developing a variety of techniques in problem solving and ideation while using visual elements and principles in compositional forms. To support students in becoming independent and creative thinkers who will contribute critical and inventive thought to their society through the making of art.

Expectations
Homework Students will receive specific assignments as well as be asked to work on particular class assignments at home. They should be prepared to spend four to eight hours a week outside of class on their own work. Sketchbook - Students will use a sketchbook as their journal to work through ideas, to practice drawing and design skills, and to document their journey through the year. Sketchbooks will be used as a tool for developing and recording their ideas. Critiques the majority of the class is spent making artwork however the process is as important as the product. Students are expected to participate in group and individual critiques throughout the year. Individual instructional conversations with the teacher will assist each student in learning to assess their own strengths and weaknesses and develop individual and unique drawings and compositions. These conversations will help the students to discover ongoing ways to improve their art making. Student Objectives: Work through and solve visual problems effectively. Refine your drawing and design skills and explore different art techniques. Understand how art elements and design principles communicate. Pursue art with passion and without fear!

Grading: 30% Projects 30% Process 20% Responses/Articulations 20% Class Participation Class Participation includes students participation in group and individual critiques, preparation for final projects, taking photos of their work etc.

* Cleaning up your area of the art studio is also directly related to your class participation grade. Supplies
1. Pencil and Pencil sharpener (that holds the shavings), or, a mechanical pencil. 2. White eraser or a tan eraser. 3. Sketchbook. 4. Folder 5. Crayons and colored pencils. 6. One black ballpoint pen. 7. A black sharpie or other fine point permanent marker. 8. One permanent glue stick (Avery brand is the best). 9. An open mind and a positive attitude.

Introduction to 2-Design Sign up for a time to meet with the instructor to discuss previous work that may be use for the AP portfolio. Unit 2 Exploring your passion Introduction to the series. Design focus- Repetition Medium- Mixed Media Unit 3 Time Explore the ways in which time can be documented through art. Design focusTechnique-Drawing Unit 4 Reflections Design focus- Composition Technique-Collage and Printmaking Unit 5 Contrasto Positive/Negative Space Study Using Contrasto, create a composition with a visually interesting and balanced use of positive and negative space. Design focusContrast Technique-Collage Unit 6 From Realism to Abstraction- Create a series of 3 works that evolve from realistic to abstract (ex: Mondrians trees) Design focus- Color Technique- Painting Unit 7 Identity Create a work that illustrates identities through the combination of images and the written word.
