Ours to Discover
Sight Words and Spelling During the first 2 weeks, Ive been testing your childs ability to read levelled sight words. Next week, we will begin our second component of The Daily 5: Word Work. We will learn how to read and spell our levels sight words in a variety of ways, including: using sidewalk chalk spelling using stickers and stencils beading letters onto pipecleaners making our words with string building our words with playdough playing the BANG! reading game looking for our words in books.

Mathematics We have been working hard on our unit on patterning. Student have been using manipulatives (learning tools) to create, extend, and talk about patterns. We even made a patterning book to show you! You can help at home by finding patterns around you: on tissue boxes, wallpaper, clothing, etc. Homework Reading with your child at home is always encouraged. About 20 minutes is a good target time for most students in the primary years. Students are also encouraged to practice their weekly sight words at home. We will have time to practice in class with our manipulatives (learning tools) and teachers. Attached is a homework BINGO card. Please initial each square as your child completes a task and return on or before Friday each week. Please try to have your child complete at least one row each week.

Every Friday, we will have a spelling quiz.

Being good spellers helps us be good writers. Being good writers will help us communicate our ideas more easily and help our Work on Writing stamina. Knowing how to read more words automatically will help our reading ability, confidence, and fluency. Here are this weeks sight words. Your childs levelled group of words is highlighted; these are his/her words for the week. We will begin learning to read Sincerely, and write 3 words per week.
