Mr. Barnes
1. How can math be used to solve the world's problems?
Grade: 8 Trimester: 1 Topic: How does a variable change another variable? Driving Question: What are causes of the world's problems? What are the solutions to the world's problems? How can we use math to solve problems? Can you find correlations?

Prompt (what students will do, demonstrate knowledge of what main standards and big ideas, apply what skills) Student will choose a world problem, research it, find data that correlates, model the data using a linear function, and propose solutions to that problem.

2. Vision & Essential Learnings

Vision: Creative Problem Solvers Generate ideas + best possible solutions to problems Apply knowledge x-disciplines + in real life situations Display curiosity, imagination, and insights Think critically: analyzes, interprets, synthesizes, etc. Department Essential Learnings: Math Reason mathematically; Evaluate if answers reasonable and identify relationships and patterns Develop generalizations based on results obtained Use appropriate tools, concepts, skills to find solutions Vision: Effective Communicators Support positions considering multiple perspectives Collaborate with others Present ideas clearly in writing + oral presentation Use all forms of media to inform, convey, persuade

Student Work Sample of Summative Product:

This work demonstrates real world relevance and employs appropriate media. It answers the driving question and shows evidence of the RUSD vision, our dept. EL's, and the core content standards.

4. Reflection:
Wow. What a great experience. I love to see students excited about math and make arguments. We have been having great discussions for three months now! The key was to start with the emotional aspect of math -- I asked students the first day, "What world problem do you CARE about?" and the question, "Why do we need to know math?" was answered. They have spent a great deal of time researching and struggling with the data. They use the scientific method to enlighten themselves to what is really going on.
