CsBr3 has been prepared in high purity. Its enthalpy of formation has been determined by solution calorimetry to be (433.

8 2.0) kJ mol1. The vapor pressure of Br2 over CsBr3 has been measured as a function of temperature; the thermal data and the vapor pressures do not yield consistent Gibbs free energies for the decomposition of CsBr3. Although CsBr3 is difficult to prepare in high purity, and although it evolves Br2 at a substantial rate even at room temperature, it may be useful as a quantitative oxidant in certain solution-calorimetry applications. Another trihalide, N(C2H5)4Cl3, has been prepared and the vapor pressure of Cl2has been measured; this compound is not sufficiently stable to be useful as a quantitative oxidant.
