THE CULVERTS ARE DESIGNED TO CARRY THE NORMAL HIGHWAY LOADING, TYPE HA AS GIVEN IN B. S . 5400 AND MAX. 2 .0 m. OF FILL MATERIAL ABOVE THE CULVERT. THE CONCRETE COVER TO REINFORCEMENT BARS SHALL BE AS FOLLOWS IF NOT OTHERWISE SHOWN:- GENERALLY = 30m - UNDERSIDE OF FOUNDATION SLAB = 50mm

FORMWORK.
ALL FORMWORK SHALL BE APPROVED BY THE BRIDGE ENGINEER. ALL EXPOSED ARISES TO HAVE 25x 25mm CHAMFERS.

FOUNDATION LEVELS EXCAVATION.

ALL FOUNDATION LEVELS SHOWN ON THE DRAWINGS ARE TENTATIVE AND ALL FOUNDATIONS WILL BE REQUIRED TO BE FOUNDED AT A LEVEL AND IN A STRATUM TO BE DETERMINED ON SITE BY THE BRIDGE ENGINEER. ALL EXCAVATIONS SHALL BE EXCAVATED TO THE LINES AND DEPTH DIRECTED BY THE BRIDGE ENGINEER. ALL EXCAVATIONS TO BE APPROVED BY THE BRIDGE ENGINEER PRIOR TO ANY CONSTRUCTION WORK INCLUDING LAYING OF BLINDING.

PROTECTION AND CURING OF CONCRETE.


THE CONCRETE SURFACE SHALL IMMEDIATELY AFTER COMPLETION, BE PROTECTED FROM THE HARMFULL EFFECTS OF SUN, DRYING, WINDS, RAINS RUNNING WATER AND SHOCKS. IT SHALL-BE KEPT DAMP FOR AT LEAST 5 DAYS AS FOLLOWS:VERTICAL FACES: THE FORMWORK SHALL BE LEFT IN PLACE, AND SPRAYED WITH WATER REGULARLY

FILLING.
FILLING FOR STRUCTURE SHALL BE OF SELECTED. MATERIAL, AS DIRECTED BY THE ENGINEER BROUGHT UP IN HORIZONTAL LAYERS NOT EXCEEDING 150mm COMPACTED THICKNESS, EACH LAYER SHALL BE THOROUGHLY MIXED, WATERED AND DRIED AS NECESSARY, AND COMPACTED TO A MINIMUM DRY DENSITY OF 95'/. MA/D.(13.5.1377)

HORIZONTAL FACES: THE EXPOSED CONCRETE SURFACES SHALL BE COVERED BY A 50-100mm LAYER OF SAND WHICH IS KEPT CONSTANTLY WET BY SPRAYING IT WITH WATER REGULARLY

SCOUR PROTECTION
RIP -RAP, GROUTED STONE PITCHING OR GABIONS FOR SCOUR PROTECTION AND FOR STABILIZATION OF EMBANKMENT SHALL BE PLACED AS DIRECTED BY THE BRIDGE ENGINEER.

CONCRETE.
THE FOLLOWING CONCRETE GRADES SHALL BE USED ( MAXIMUM SIZE OF AGGREGATE IN mm IS INDICATED IN BRACKET) GRADE 15130 )-BLINDI NG, GRADE 25 (201-BOX CULVERTS. CONCRETE SHALL NOT BE PLACED BEFORE THE BRIDGE ENGINEERS APPROVAL OF THE FORMWORK AND REINFORCEMENT HAS BEEN GIVEN. ALL CONCRETE SHALL BE THOROUGHLY COMPACTED BY INTERNAL VIBRATION TO PRODUCE A DENSE UNIFORM MASS WITHOUT SEGREGATION AND WITHOUT VOIDS.

GENERAL ARRANGEMENT DRAWINGS.


A GENERAL ARRANGEMENT DRAWING SHALL BE PREPARED FOR ALL NEW CULVERTS BEFORE CONSTRUCTION WORK IS STARTED. AFTER CONSTRUCTION WORK HAS BEEN COMPLETED, THE GENERAL ARRANGEMENT DRAWING SHALL BE UPDATED AND MARKED WITH THE WORD CAS BUILT) AND DATED. THIS DRAWING SHALL FULLY DEFINE THE COMPLETED STRUCTURE AND THE ORIGINAL WILL BE FILED IN M.O. T. &C MAP STORE. THE GENERAL ARRANGEMENT DRAWING SHALL INCLUDE THE FOLLOWING INFORMATION: LOCATION MAP. THE FOLLOWING SHALL BE INCLUDED ON THE MAP: - ROAD NUMBER -RIVER NAME AS SPECIFIED ON 1:50,000 TOPOGRAPHIC MAP SHEET. - 1:50,000 TOPOGRAPHIC MAP SHEET NUMBER AND GRID REFERENCE. - NAME OF AND DISTANCE IN KM. FROM NEARBY IDENTIFIABLE SPOT ON EACH SIDE OF BRIDGE SITE. THE GALVANIZING SHALL COMPLY WITH B.S. 443. 3. ASSEMBLY OF GABION BOXES AND MATTRESSES SHALL BE DONE ACCORDING TO THE MANUFACTURES INSTRUCTIONS. GABION BOX ELEMENTS SHALL BE EDGED WITH A 4mm DIA. WIRE SELVIDGE TO GIVE THE BOX STABILITY. ALL WIRING SHALL BE DONE AS A CONTINUOUS LACING OPERATION,NOT WITH INDIVIDUAL TWISTS AT INTERVALS . TIGHTNESS OF THE MESH AND WIRING IS ASSENTIAL AT ALL TIMES. 4 THE GABION STRUCTURE SHALL BE FORMED BY WIRING THE GABIONS BOXES AND/OR MATTRESSES TOGETHER, USING EXACTLY THE SAME METHOD AS FOR ASSEMBLING SINGLE GABIONS ( SEE NOTE 3.) GABIONS SHALL BE PLACED AND WIRED TOGETHER EIxPTY- IT IS DIFFICULT TO WIRE GABIONS TOGETHER WHEN ONE IS FULL OF STONE. S. THE FILL SHALL BE A HARD DURABLE STONE, IN SIZE BETWEEN 75mm TO 200mm FILL THE GABIONS BY HAND AND MANE SURE THE STONE IS TIGHTLY PACKED AND HAS A MINIMUM OF VOIDS AFTER FILLING SLIGHTLY OVERFULL, TO ALLOW FOR SETTLMENT, STRECH THE LIDS TIGHTLY OVER THE FILLING AND WIRE THEM DOWN. 6. THE ENDS OF A GABION STRUCTURE SHALL NEVER PROJECT INTO THE FLOW BUT SHALL TAPER SMOOTHLY INTO THE BANK . WHERE BOTH A VERTICAL WALL AND A LINING ARE REQUIRED NEXT TO EACH OTHER A TRANSITION FROM ONE FORM OF STRUCTURE TO THE OTHER SHALL BE DONE IN STAGES. ONE EXAMPLE IS A CULVERT WHICH HAS VERTICAL WINGWALL FACES, WHILE THE CHANNEL UP-AND DOWNSTREAM HAS A TRAPEZOIDAL CROSS- SECTION. THE GABION WALL NEXT TO THE WINGWALL SHALL BE VERTICAL (DETAIL 3) BUT AS IT PROCEEDS AWAY FROM THE WINGWALL STEPS BETWEEN THE COURSES OF GABION BOXES SHALL BE FORMED AND GRADUALLY INCREASED IN WIDTHS UNTIL A SLOPE OF SAY 1:1 IS OBTAINED (DETAIL 2) AT THIS POINT THE RETAINING WALL SECTION CHANGES TO A STEPPED REVERTMENT .
