LIFE SKILLS: SELF AWARENESS


Self-Awareness includes our recognition of 'Self', of our character, of our Strengths and Weaknesses and Desires and Dislikes. Developing Self-Awareness can help us to recognize when we are stressed or feel under pressure. It is also often a prerequisite to Effective-Communication and Interpersonal Relations as well as developing Empathy for others. To enhance understanding of self and others, following Self Awareness Exercise was conducted at various class levels.

In class VI: Inner Self and Learning Styles


Students were asked to write ten statements describing themselves. Then they were explained about External, Social and Inner Self. Students were then asked to categorize the statements and put EM/ SM/ IM against each statement. Students were able to learn about o o o Their Physical Self like age, gender, appearance Their Social-Self ie their parents, brothers and sisters, relatives, school and country etc. Their Inner Self ie qualities or talents that they possess and are valued by themselves or others

Students were then asked to fill the questionnaire of Learning Styles. They were helped in understanding the statements and mark their responses. Then they were explained each of the learning style namely Auditory, Visual and Kinesthetic and what are the preferred activities of each learning style. Students learned about their major style of learning and what activities would help them in learning better. They also understood thato Everyone has a mix of learning styles. o Some people may find that they have a dominant style of learning, with far less use of the other styles. Others may find that they use different styles in different circumstances. o We can develop ability in less dominant styles, as well as further develop styles that we already use well.

In class IX and X: Self Esteem, Multiple Intelligence and Personality Type Indicator
Students were provided various questionnaires to make them aware about their interests, aspirations, strengths, weaknesses and concerns. Following questionnaires were usedo Level of Self Esteem questionnaire based on Rosenberg Self Esteem Scale, o Intelligence type based on Multiple Intelligence Model by Howard Gardner and o Personality Type checklist based on Myres and Briggs Type Indicator (MBTI) Students were able to understand their interests, aspirations, strengths, weaknesses and concerns. Students became more aware about their level of self esteem, their natural intelligence and their preferred learning style. Students also explored preferred roles, preferences, strengths and related career choices matching with their personality type.

This exercise helped in developing the concept of Self-Exploration and Self-Awareness among Students.
