Ms. Henkel 7th Advanced Language Arts Periods 1, 5 Week 7- Sept 23-27 Weekly Standards/ Objectives 1.

TSW analyze short story by connecting it to own writing process. 2. TSW analyze famous first lines by using first lines to create a definition of a good first line. 3. TSW model famous first lines by creating 3 potential first lines for their own story. 4. TSW compare/contrast 2 plot lines by recognizing and explaining the differences between the two. 5. TSW explain and use the Finding Evidence formula by using the formula to answer given tasks. Activities/Assignments Monday: I do: Read the short story A Days Wait in literature book. Answer: What can we learn from this story before writing our own stories? We do: Students work with shoulder partners to examine 6 famous first lines from novels. Students will explain why each of the 6 sentences is a good first line and then when all 6 are looked at, students should write a definition for a good first line. You do: Students should write three potential first lines and shoulder partner will choose the one that should be used. Closure: Write down homework in agenda: Finish plot line and write 1st line. Tuesday: I do: Sunrise Activity: Explain the difference between show and tell. Write an example of each. Introduce the importance of change in the writing process. We do: Students work with shoulder partner to compare 2 plot lines from actual written story. The first one is the first plot line that was written. The revised one is the first one with changes made. With their partner, students should find differences between the 2 plot lines and write why they think the author decided to make the change. You do: Explain the importance of making changes even at this initial writing stage by having students make changes to their plot lines. Closure: n/a Wednesday: I do: Sunrise Activity: You are writing a story. You have chosen space as the setting for your story. Descriptively describe your characters. Present Finding Evidence formula: Based on (specific evidence from text-part of the text) [because-explain evidence] (I think, the correct answer is, etc) Answer [because-explain how evidence chosen proves answer] We do: Practice using Finding Evidence Formula with RHL school activities (finding word meaning from context/choosing a topic) You do: Use Finding Evidence Formula to find evidence from the Robert Frost Meet the Writer Section that explains how Robert Frosts life influenced his writing of The Runaway Closure: Write Homework in Agenda: Be ready to write story in computer lab on Friday.
