How do we correctly use MLA formatting and in-text citation? Connections (prior learning/prior knowledge): Students will reference their prior experiences writing essays and identify both areas of quality and areas of growth. Time allotted MONDAY Learning TargetStudents will understand the elements present in a quality thesis. They will show their learning by writing a thesis statement based on an essay prompt. Students will be given an example essay based on the novel Kindred. Today we will focus only on the opening paragraph. As a class, we will discuss the elements that must be present in a quality opening

paragraph. There will be particular focus on the thesis statement. Then, students will be given a choice of three writing prompts based on Kindred which they will eventually use to generate an essay. In small groups, students will work together to develop quality thesis statements based on the prompt of their choice. Their exit ticket today will be a quality thesis statement. An opening paragraph will be generated in class on Tuesday, and class time on Wednesday and Thursday will be used to create essays. Friday, a rough draft of an essay will be due. TUESDAY Learning TargetStudents will understand what makes a quality opening paragraph for an analytical essay. They will show their learning by creating an opening paragraph that will be used to then generate an essay, based on a prompt. Today we will expand our work, using the thesis statements generated on Monday as a foundation to create quality opening paragraphs. Students will work in small groups to produce opening paragraphs based on the essay prompt.

FRIDAY Learning TargetStudents will develop their skills in identifying areas of quality and areas of growth in an analytical essay. They will show their learning by peer editing a rough draft of an essay based on a prompt. Students will come to class with a rough draft of an analytical essay based on a prompt. They will read the work of two of their peers, offering feedback using peer editing review sheets.
