What are the important parts of an essay? How can I improve my essay? Other considerations (modifications, accommodations, acceleration, etc.): Students who require it will receive extended deadlines for writing assignments and/or shortened reading. Connections (prior learning/prior knowledge): We will review the basic elements of essay writing, which students have been introduced to before, and expand this knowledge base to create high quality analytical essays. Daily: direct observation/writing This Week: direct observation/writing/essay/Socratic dialogue Unit: direct observation/writing/essay/Socratic dialogue Time allotted MONDAY Learning TargetStudents will understand the important elements of a conclusion paragraph in an analytical essay. They will show their learning by generating a conclusion paragraph. As a whole group, the class will discuss the elements of a quality closing paragraph. A student scribe will create a poster describing these important elements, which will be hung in the classroom. Then, individually, students will generate a conclusion paragraph for their Kindred essays (begun last week). TUESDAY Learning TargetStudents will increase their understanding of organization, diction, syntax, citation and MLA format. They will show their work by peer editing the essays-in-progress and completing a peer editing work sheet. WEDNESDAY Learning TargetAs the instructor will be absent, after the reading quiz students will have the rare opportunity to read in class and prepare themselves for Fridays Socratic dialogue.

THURSDAY Learning TargetStudents will increase their understanding of organization, diction, syntax, citation and MLA format. They will show their understanding through oral discussion of example student essays. FRIDAY Learning TargetStudents will increase their understanding of plot, theme, character development, writing style and writing as a tool for social justice. They will show their understanding through Socratic dialogue.
