Why are they important to the American literary and academic tradition? Is Transcendentalism relevant to our lives today? What does it mean to be self-reliant? Why would such a thing be important? Other considerations (modifications, accommodations, acceleration, etc.): Students who require it will receive extended deadlines for writing assignments and/or shortened reading. Connections (prior learning/prior knowledge): Students are studying the time period in which the Transcendentalists lived in History class, and will be able to relate their studies in English to this context.

They will show their learning by working alone, with peers and with the instructor to compose a personal manifesto. In class, students will produce at least one paragraph for one section of this work, addressing one of the five themes. Today we will introduce the students to the Lesson activities for instructor and students Assignment(s) DueExit ticket: One paragraph addressing one theme of the writing assignment

Transcendentalist movement. Together we will read a description of the movement, followed by an excerpt from The Transcendentalist by Ralph Waldo Emerson. We will then discuss the meaning of the excerpt, and the relevance (or lack of relevance) of the Transcendentalist movement to our lives today. Next, students will write their own personal manifesto. This piece will be an expression of their individual philosophy toward life. It must include their thoughts on the individuals relationship to: 1. Government 2. Society 3. Nature 4. The divine 5. Academic learning The rough draft will be due Wed. The final draft will be due Friday, and must be typed, double spaced, MLA format (though there will be no intext citation) and Times New Roman (12 point). TUESDAY Learning TargetStudents will improve their understanding of organization, theme, audience and writing style in non-fiction work. They will show their learning by working alone, with peers and with the instructor to compose a personal manifesto.
