On the number line the way that you would add positive and negative numbers is that if you add 1 + 1 you start with one and add one more than you move the dot one space to the right for 2. for negatives it is the opposites you start with -1 and add -1 you move it once to the left and you get -2 for the answer. If you are adding -1 + 3 you start at -1 and because you are adding a positive you will move it to the right not the left and get 2. but if you are adding 3 + -1 you have to start will 3 and move it to the left 1 space to get 2 as the answer.

When you add something that are the same two numbers with opposite signs you get 0

If you have numbers with the same sign than the number will get a higher number than before. If you have numbers with different signs than the number will get smaller.
