Rios Landscape
In short, Rio is a big city with more development on the coasts and backed by favela (slum) areas on the hills.

Confetaria Colombo, a must visit dessert & coffee place in Rio that survived from the 16th AD. Even in this nice place, the waiter had to secure our bags with plastic safety ban to avoid theft. Its Rio.

A general conference done every three years held by and for museum community from all over the world. ICOM has a consultative status with UNESCO central office in Paris. Themes ranged from research, museum content development, communication up to legal issues

Favela inspired art and works can be easily found in the city. ICOM Rio invites a group of young Brazillians to make their own Favela inspired art on a wall in the expo area

Off Site Activities


Off site activities are one of the great thing about ICOM. Through group site visit, museum professionals discuss, compare and learn Brazillian museums current practice. The knowledge benefited from this then brought back to richen each owns local museums. Below are the sites visited in the occasion:

Museu Nacional

The oldest museum in Brazil. Consist of Brazil ethnological identity, dinosaurs and meteorites!

Mummies!

Museu Nacional has one of the great collection of mummified specimens of South America. Gory but very interesting

Indonesian / Brazillian?

Top : oil lamps from terracotta and bronze, similar with the ones found from 13th -15th AD sites in Java.

Below right: Weaponry & drums from Papua (but they put Java on the label)

> Below left: Stone axe and scorched stone used to sharpen the tool. Similar ones found still currently used in Papua

Communal Museum

Museu du Mare, located in Favela (slum) area of Mare. This communalcurating museum was built by the people of Mare as an expression of their social culture adaptation on their way of life.

Communal Curating

Unlike conventional museums, this museum collects everyday life items that compose the identity of the people in Mare.

Church Saint Francis of Penance

One of the oldest church in Rio that has been in conservation in the last 5 yras. It has been continuously used for religious activities and also museum

Museu de Arte do Rio

A refreshed old museum with an addition of modern style building behind it

A very good reference for development of Museum Nasional Indonesia, for it has similar issue on the use of old protected building as museum

Favela Installation
This piece is not only a miniature, but also a canvas showing peoples concerns and questions to the government, written on them

Imagina Rio

An interesting way of showing Rio de Janeiro visual documentation from 16th AD to now

Centro Central Banco Brasilia

(Museum of) Brazilian Central Bank, considered as one of the least-boring museum in Rio. Open untill 9 pm, its exhibit galleries showing contemporary installations, religious collection and permanent exhibit on currency. The place is a great model of public space equipped with caf, book store and a edukids corner.

Casa Franca Brasilia

Casa Franca Brasilia (House of French Brazillians) is a historic house turn into temporary exhibit area. At the time, a Moor inspired installation of terracota structure was on show
